Rolling off his bed was not Percy's idea of a perfect morning. However, here he was and today was better than most. Percy picked himself off of the cold hardwood with a groan. Could be worse, he thought to himself, Gabe could have been home. He stumbled through the apartment to the bathroom and brushed his teeth. It had been exactly two months since his mother passed. There wasn't a moment of every day when Percy didn't miss her. He would have traded his life for hers in a second but mostly he just wished that Gabe could have died in her place. His "stepfather" was now his only family left and had given him a week before he had to get out.
Two days ago, he felt completely and utterly hopeless. He had searched up and down for an apartment, but unsurprisingly finding a cheap yet livable apartment in Manhattan in a week is as impossible as bringing his mom back to life. It simply wasn't going to happen. Normally he would have messaged his friend Rachel and asked if he could bunk with her for a bit, but she had been sent away for boarding school. As much as he adored her headstrong attitude, he really wished she could have bit her tongue this one time.
Percy would have been lying if he said Leo McLean was anything more than casual friends who hang out every now and then. However both of them were the type that when someone has earned their loyalty, they have their back. So Leo had been gracious enough to let him stay in his apartment for a bit rent free. As bad as Percy felt not paying for the apartment, it's not like he really had a choice. He said yes and today was finally move in day. He packed his singular small box with his stuff, and hopped on the subway to get to the upper east side.
When Percy got off at his stop and walked up the steps to sidewalk, he sucked in a breath. Truth was he felt way uncomfortable. He was used to the Lower East side where everyone knew each other and their was family owned Deli's on every corner. He definitely didn't think he belonged here as he walked along the shops and fancy apartments. As he turned the corner he made a sigh of discontent as rat scurried by his feet. Glad to see some things in New York never change... Percy stifled a laugh, Nobody hates and loves New York at the same time more than New Yorkers.
Percy turned the corner and stared at the beige building. He had to admit, the whole building was gorgeous. He had never really cared about how the city looked. In all honesty, it annoyed him. Him and his mom had to fight for everything they had. Seeing fancy buildings with flowerpots and engravings just reminded of the fact that he never had a childhood. As annoying as it is, it still took his breath away.
He stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the 20th floor. He stepped out in the hallway and and stopped at apartment 20D. He pulled out the keys Leo gave him and unlocked the door. Percy blinked as he saw boxes piled up in the apartment. Wasn't Leo and Piper supposed to be moved out by now? Leo had told him that the apartment was his now.
"Um... Hello??"
Percy whirled around to see who was talking to him. She was relatively tall and to be fair, looked very pretty but mostly pissed off. He was mostly focused on the golden blonde ringlets around her shoulders.
"What the hell are you doing in my apartment?"
"What do you mean," Percy retorted, " Leo McLean is a friend of mine and said I could stay here for awhile. Who even are you anyways?"
"I'm Annabeth."
