A few weeks in to Bucky's treatment and you had made yourself comfortable at T'challa's hide out. Maria Hill had sent out some work for you to get through during your stay and you'd also managed to find space in one of the labs to help around in order to keep yourself busy. You'd finished all the books you'd brought along long ago.
Bucky and Steve spent almost all of their days working through Bucky's treatment plan and while it meant that they were progressing quickly, you found yourself alone and bored out of your mind.
It was Saturday and most of the lab technicians you worked with were spending the weekend with their families so instead you sat curled up at the small table by the living room window. You were almost finished one of the files Maria had sent your way when the front door opened, pulling your thoughts away from the work in front of you. You craned your neck around to face the two men who greeted you as they entered.
"You're home early." You remarked, watching as Bucky took a seat on the couch behind you and Steve made his way over to stand by your side.
Steve grinned, placing a hand on your shoulder and peering down at the papers in front of you curiously before speaking. "They think we've finished all the procedures." He explained, your eyebrows shooting upwards in surprise as you looked over to Bucky.
Bucky threw you an exhausted smile and shrugged. "They're giving us the evening off before they start running the tests tomorrow."
"That's great!" you exclaimed, sitting up straighter in your chair and turning your entire body around to face your friends. "How do you feel?"
You asked him the same question nearly every evening but the answer he gave you that afternoon was the best yet.
"The best I've felt in years."
Later that evening after the three of you had eaten, Steve convinced both you and Bucky to join him for a watch. He had been about to suggest Titanic, a film Tony had cleverly snuck on to his catching up list, when you beat him to it and recommended Pirate's of the Caribbean instead.
You were about half way through the movie, sat snuggly between Steve and a large pillow when your phone went off, taking all three of you by surprise. Bucky paused the TV, him and Steve watching in amusement as you continued to apologize profusely while pulling your cellphone out from your back pocket.
Checking the caller ID, you frowned in confusion and stood up, Steve's arm falling down to his side.
"Who is it?" he asked curiously. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, sorry, It's Tony." You explained. "I think I need to take this; you guys continue the movie without me."
Before they could respond, you swiped your thumb across the screen and rushed in to your bedroom.
"Hey" you greeted, closing the door behind you. "What's up, Tony?"
"Y/N!" You pulled the phone away from your ear and grimaced at the volume of his voice.
"How is your little vacation with Cap going?" you could practically hear the shit eating grin on his face as he continued to speak. "How's our dear old Winter Soldier doing?"
"Ha ha, Tony. You know this is anything but a vacation and please stop calling him that."
Tony snorted on the other end and you rolled your eyes.
"You're making me miss our movie night. Come on, why did you call me, Stark?"
"I can't call because I miss you?"
"Tony."
"What?" he chuckled, picking up on your obvious annoyance.
"Come on, why did you call?"
"I just... Something's come up back in New York. I need Steve." He finally admitted, taking you by surprise.
"Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, Yeah! Everything's fine just a minor assassination attempt from an unidentified enhanced but we're all good. Nothing to worry about over here."
"What?"
"Don't worry about it, Y/N. Everyone is safe and everything is under control... kind of." He tried to assure you. "Can you pass me over to Cap now? Sam's nagging has been driving me insane."
"Right. I'll go give him the phone now." You promised, heading back out in to the hall. "Why didn't you just call him?"
"Because," Tony began, very matter of fact. "Like all men his age, Cap is incapable of using a smartphone."
You laughed, realizing that he was right, as you entered the living room.
"Steve?" You called, both men turning around to face you. "Tony needs to talk to you. Something's come up in New York."
The tall blond stood immediately, his face stern as he stood before you in two large strides. You handed him the phone and took your seat back on the couch, lounging next to Bucky instead. When Steve left you there, you could still hear the hum of his low voice through the closed bedroom door, speaking frantically to the man on the other end of the line. As his voice began to raise you focused your eyes on the television in front of you and tried to refrain from eavesdropping on their conversation. You took in the screen in front of you and turned to Bucky.
"I thought I told you guys to keep watching without me?" It was still paused at the exact same moment you'd left.
Bucky glanced towards the screen before meeting your eyes sheepishly. "We didn't want you to miss anything, it's a really good movie."
"I know. I've already seen it at least half a dozen times." You grinned.
Bucky nearly mirrored your actions and was about to ask you about your day when Steve rushed back in to the room, your phone in hand. He marched over and passed it to you before running his hand through his messy hair and sighing out in frustration.
"What's going on?" Bucky spoke up, "What did Stark need?"
You looked towards Steve, also expecting an answer.
"There was an attack on the tower by an enhanced." He explained, taking a seat in one of the kitchen table chairs. "Everyone is safe but they need me back in New York by tomorrow morning."
"Are you sure you don't need me to come along?" you asked from your stance in the doorway.
Steve shook his head as he continued to shove clothes in to his duffle.
"I'm sure, Y/N." he eyed the hallway behind you before continuing to speak. "Besides, I need you to keep an eye on Bucky while I'm gone. Make sure he's okay for me, alright?"
"Of course I will. Just promise me you'll be careful. Stay safe."
"I'm always careful." He grinned down at you, zipping up the bag and throwing it over his shoulder before walking the two of you out in to the hallway.
"Steve you've flown yourself in to the Atlantic Ocean and jumped out of an airplane without a parachute. Don't even get me started about when you jumped out of that elevator." You scolded.
"You don't need to worry about me. I'll be fine."
"I do need to worry about you." You argued, raising your voice slightly. "especially since I won't have your back this time round!"
You took a deep breath and lowered the volume of your voice, begging. "Please just promise me you'll be safe."
Steve's face softened at your words and he pulled you into a hug, promising you what you needed to hear.
When the two of you separated, he gave your shoulders one last reassuring squeeze before heading to the living room where Bucky waited.
The both of you accompanied Steve out to the platform and watched him board the small helicopter that awaited him in silence. You stood side by side in silence, waving goodbye as your friend took off back to New York City without you. Once the sound of the blades began to fade and the helicopter had disappeared through the jungle's low clouds, you turned to face Bucky.
"Guess it's just the two of us, huh?"
