"I can't believe you did all of this!" Steve gasped, looking around the room in shock. Pam nodded along numbly and you shrugged, both of them catching the glint of hope and pride in your eyes.
Bucky's birthday was in only a few days and you had taken it upon yourself to put together a party for him. Reserving one of the many open spaces in the tower, you'd spent your month's earnings and the entire week buying and putting up the decorations, hiring a DJ and getting drinks and snacks for the guests.
Of course Tony could have easily paid for a much more extravagant celebration, but things were still kind of tense between the two of them and you wanted to do something for Bucky yourself. Maybe if he could just see that you'd forgiven him and it was all in the past, the two of you could become close once again.
"Is there anything left to do? Can I help in any way?" Steve asked, still looking around the room in awe.
You nodded, relieved that he'd offered. "Could you cover the food? I was planning on ordering from that Italian restaurant he really likes..."
"I can!" Pam suddenly perked up. "I'll cover that, don't worry about it."
You smiled and thanked her. Honestly, if she or Steve hadn't volunteered, you would have had to ask Tony to chip in.
"Everything set?" Pam asked, entering the hall as you finished putting up the final touches.
The party was in two days and as everything finally began to come together, you couldn't be more excited.
"I think so!" you beamed, carefully climbing down from the ladder. "I can't wait to see his face... Could you go let the others know what's going on? I want everyone except Bucky ready for this Friday."
"Sure thing." Pam nodded, turning back towards the elevator.
"F.R.I.D.A.Y.?" you called out as she disappeared behind the sliding doors.
"Yes, Y/N?"
"You still have this floor blocked off for Bucky, right?"
"I do."
"Thanks, F.R.I.D.A.Y."
"It's my pleasure, Y/N"
Bucky breathed out, laughing as he took in his surroundings.
"This is amazing." He began, "absolutely amazing."
You couldn't stop the smile that crept on to your face as Steve snuck you a wink and a thumbs up.
"Steve?" Bucky asked, turning towards him.
"Not me, birthday boy." Steve grinned.
"Then who-?"
"Which dame do you think is capable of putting together something like this, Buck?" Steve laughed, lightly nudging his friend's side.
Bucky's face lit up and you felt your heartbeat quicken, cheeks flushing red. The joy and excitement began to swell in your chest as Bucky looked up, eyes scanning through the small crowd and eventually meeting yours. You felt your breath catch in your throat. But when his eyes continued past yours and on to Pam, your chest deflated.
Steve froze, beginning to panic as he watched the scene unfold. He'd known all along that you'd done this to fix your relationship with Bucky, pouring endless time and money into the event. He was the only one in the room to notice as the smile dropped off of your face and disappointment clouded your eyes.
Bucky stepped towards Pam and her mouth hung open, eyes darting towards you in confusion. Bucky didn't take notice, instead his smile reached his eyes, making them crinkle at the edges as he stared down at his friend in admiration.
