there was once a time in which being a belle was oikawa's entire life. his promotion to head belle only fed into this idea, and it took an assassination attempt for him to realize that there was more to his existence than tailoring the looks of others.

oikawa's life changed when the king had assigned iwaizumi hajime to guard oikawa at all times.

iwaizumi hajime, who had only been tailored once in his entire life. iwaizumi hajime, who was tragically handsome and rugged and everything that oikawa was inherently not. iwaizumi hajime, who had been the only one in the entire castle not to treat him as if he was on a pedestal as high as the royals themselves.

oikawa's world was expanded when iwaizumi entered his life, and he welcomed the change with open arms.

the start of their whirlwind romance had been a flurry of stolen kisses and escapades through dark hallways and late nights. it had only worked for a few months, until fellow bell sugawara koushi had stumbled upon them in a quite compromising position.

sugawara had promised to keep his discovery a secret. however, both oikawa and iwaizumi had so much on the line regarding both of their high positions. that was when oikawa decided to propose the idea to the king about his own retirement.

oikawa had suggested a few current belles to become his understudy, such as akaashi keiji who had both the experience and the talent to take up such an important role.

the king had countered his suggestion with his knowledge of a special pair of twins on the other side of the country who had caught his eye. the miya twins.

in all honesty, oikawa would have preferred to train akaashi. akaashi knew the limits of his power, he was used to the immense responsibility of a belle, and oikawa knew him relatively well.

but, oikawa was in no position to oppose the king right now. so he had agreed without protest.

there were a few things that oikawa certainly wouldn't miss about the castle. he wouldn't miss dealing with the bratty queen or her equally bratty son. he wouldn't miss the attention cast upon him, and he wouldn't miss the need to keep his relationship with the captain of the guard a secret.

on the other hand, it would be hard for oikawa to give up his position. oikawa did truly enjoy tailoring. he had an immense amount of talent for it, and knowing that in a year he wouldn't be able to alter one's appearance did scare him to an extent. but iwaizumi was worth it. he had to be, oikawa was sure of it.

after talking to the king about his future retirement, oikawa had been especially busy. he took note of the special requests the king and queen and for their tailorings and made sure to note that the crown prince would act out occasionally if pressured to tailor. he made lesson plans and even cleared out a spare room in his quarters for whatever twin would move into the castle.

iwaizumi had been elated to hear the news. keeping a relationship from their friends had been difficult, and the two were relieved to be able to act selfishly for once.

the other belles had been nothing supportive of oikawa and iwaizumi's relationship. however, the news was mostly overshadowed by the growing excitement of the new belles arrival in the coming days.

there would be three joining the ranks in the palace this year, and the competition occurring up north between the two potential belles had been unprecedented.

it was certainly an exciting time to be a belle.
