SUNA RINTAROU crafted a list of three rules to live by when he was on the island.

number one was to keep your head low. individuality would get you killed on the island.

number two was to keep your mouth shut. once again, individuality could get you killed. there wasn't anything to talk about on the island anyway, so suna had no struggle with this one.

the last rule was to keep your ears open. that was suna's very own special talent.

suna had always been intuitive, and spending years on the island only sharpened his intuition. suna took people at face value, and he was rarely wrong in his early assumptions.

he heard rumors on the island. he heard whispered names of kodzuken and the privateer. he heard rumors that change was coming, that the island will soon just be a dark stain on the kingdom's history.

suna didn't believe them.

he had spent fifteen years of his life on the island. any hope he had for retribution and freedom was crushed when he was still a young boy.

the day suna rintarou was selected to be integrated back into the kingdom alongside ojiro aran left a bitter taste in suna's life.

sure, he was happy to finally escape this hellhole of a life, but he had grown incredibly spiteful of the outside world. his parents were long gone, any family connections he had back on the mainland had turned away when they heard of his parent's supposed war crimes. he had no one to go home to.

he doubted anyone would truly understand him anyways.

for once in suna's life, his intuition was wrong. when miya osamu presented himself into suna's life, suna began seeing things in a different light.

sure, suna still harbored the burden of his immense anger for the kingdom, but he had started funneling it into worthwhile things.

like planning the demise of society while making croissants with osamu!

suna knew that osamu would never truly understand what he went through, but osamu could definitely empathize.

suna was no idiot, he knew that miya osamu also held some sort of grudge against the world he grew up in. imagine training your whole life to do something only for someone else to snatch everything you were supposed to be away from you.

it didn't matter that it was osamu's own twin, he had to feel some kind of resentment.

that is why every few days or so, suna would accidentally let something slip about his past in the island. suna didn't believe in the change he heard rumors of on the island, but he'd be damned if he left this world without leaving an impact.

when suna rintarou goes down, he goes down swinging.

but for now, suna rintarou was no revolutionary figure. he was just a baker at the miya family bakery. his time would come.

all he could do for now is prep.

and that is where he is at now, sitting across the table from miya osamu with kodzuken's most recent pamphlet spread in front of them.

suna looked at it with an uninterested gaze while osamu's jaw hung slack, not fully understanding what was being said.

"suna," he breathed, "can you believe it? a damned man in the castle?"

though suna acted as if he was rather uninterested, he was in fact quite surprised by the subject. if there was truly a damned man in the palace then maybe the rumors on the island weren't entirely false.

suna tried to keep his voice monotone as he spoke, trying to calm his racing heart.

"i'm not sure samu," he started, "i mean look at me, if you didn't know i came from the island would you think i was once a damned man?"

osamu shook his head.

"exactly, i don't understand what the king would be thinking fostering a damned man, but i don't think it would be that difficult to hide the information." suna explained.

osamu still looked perplexed, "but why would the king have a damned man in the castle. not like i'm against it, but that goes against every law he's put in place."

"that is a mystery," suna sighed, "maybe write your brother about it?"

osamu leaned forward and rested his chin in his hand, "that's a good idea."

"how is he adjusting to castle life?" suna asked, tired of talking about such serious matters.

osamu laughed, "apparently he got into a disagreement with the crown prince. i wouldn't put it past him, he's always been an ass."

"you seem to have an interesting relationship with him," suna said.

osamu waved his hand in the air, "it's all just playful banter, i'm sure you'd understand with your siblings."

it went silent

'oh shit' osamu thought.

"i'm sorry," osamu said, "i shouldn't have said that."

suna stood and walked away from the grey haired boy, "it's ok. i'm over it."

it was an obvious lie, but suna didn't bother hiding it, osamu could pity him if he wanted to.

suna only relished in the fact that one day, as far in the future as it may be, there would be nothing to pity him for.
