Chapter 18
The events of yesterday has left me tired to the point where I overslept.
"Christ!! I'm late" I rush over to the bathroom to take a quick shower and brush my teeth.
How did my alarm not wake me. I thought
I quickly put on my uniform and drag my bag with me, heading out of the dorm. The halls are empty and classes have started. I have biology now. As I open the door, Mrs James looks my direction.
This can't be good.
"Miss Montenegro, you are late." She says looking rather bored.
"I am aware and I promise it won't happen again." I tell her.
"Of course it won't happen again. To the principal's office now!!!" She says sternly.
"But-"
"NOW." I flinch at her tone and grudgingly make may way to the principal's office. Honestly Mrs James is scary when she wants to be. I really don't want to be on her bad side but then again I think I am.
I reach the office and knock slightly and hear a "come in". I enter the office.
"Ah miss Montenegro. To what do I owe this visit?" He gestures for me to take a seat.
"I was late to class?"
"Is that a question?" He asks amused.
I sigh. "No."
"Ok just give me a minute and I'll give you your punishment."
He looks back to his computer and I take the opportunity to look around the office. I've never been here before because I had reason to. The office is large, it has white walls. There is a lounge area with three sofas and a coffee table. There's a TV here and where principal Mathews is sitting has cabinets behind him. There's also a personal bathroom in here too.
I look around his desk and it's nothing special. There's just a lot of paperwork on it. All of a sudden something catches my eye. It's a file containing the names of students who are to graduate this year. It opened to my name and data with a red stamp clearly saying,
'NOT CLEARED FOR GRADUATION'.
At this point I'm frozen in my seat not taking my eyes off the file. A hand slams it shut. I jump slightly and look up to see the principal staring at me, daring me to speak against what I saw. I make no attempt to speak and just maintain eye contact. He clears his throat.
"Miss Montenegro I expect you to clean all the dining hall for a week after breakfast lunch and dinner. I'd give you a pass in case you go late to class in the morning. That would be all." He says with an unspoken authority and hands me the pass. I simply nod my head and exit the office. My eyes filled with unshed tears. I don't return to class and make my way to my tree. I sit gently and let the tears out causing my vision to blur.
This was what he wanted. Wants me never be able to leave–remain here till the day I die.

When I was sure that school was over, I rush to the boys dorm. I reach a familiar door and begin banging with all the strength I have left until finally the door opens. Mason's eyes widen as he spots my tear stained face and pulls me into the room quickly.
"M-my dad- n-no-t gr-duate." I say inbetween sniffs. Mason and Adrian look at each other, then at me with a confused expression.
"Ok Kay, calm down because we can't understand you." Adrian says.
"Yeah Kayla sit." Mason guides me to his bed and I take a seat.
"Here." Adrian hands me a glass of water which I take a sip out of. I take in deep breaths, clear my throat and wipe my face with my sleeves.
"Now that you're calm, what actually happened." Mason asks and dive into the story of what exactly happened. After I'm done, I weigh their expression and they are angry.
"Wow I can't believe your dad would keep you here just to cover his tracks. How long does he plan to leave you here–to keep this up?" Adrian asks.
Mason then turns to me. He expression softens.
"Kayla don't think about it much. No matter what we will help you get out of here even if it means risking our lives.""Yeah." Adrian continues "We'll get you out of here somehow. I promise."
Those words echo in my head throughout the day.
