She sat, motionless on the carpet of her bedroom floor. Shes been here many of times before, but this time was different. There was no screaming, no shatters from things being broken, no crying and her brother wasn't clinging onto her, muffling the sound of his tears in her cheap t-shirt. She sat on her bedroom floor because there was nothing left in her tiny room to sit on. Her furniture had already been stuffed into a moving truck and taken to her grandmothers. She let her mind drift to the thought of her parents. Her mother was never a bad parent to be honest, she was just under the wicked spell of her boyfriend. Her mothers boyfriend was a different story. He was a terrible person. He always carried the scent of alcohol and cigarette smoke wherever he went. He treated her mother poorly, but her mother was too desperate for any kind of love to get rid of him. She brushed her fingers over all the bruises that he gave her and shuddered. There was a quiet knock on her bedroom door and she looked up to see her 8 year old brother, Joey. “Grandma says its time to leave.” Nodding her head, she got up from her spot and took one last look at the room she lived in all her life. She was never coming back here. She was glad to be leaving all her pain behind in this house but her heart still ached at the thought of leaving all the memories of when she had her real dad in this house with them. With a sigh she followed Joey out to her grandmothers range rover. She got in the car and her grandma gave her a warm smile, “Ready?” No.”Yeah, im ready.”There was two stories and five bedrooms in her grandmothers house. She was so used to everything being so cramped together that as soon as she walked through the front door she didn't know what to do. To her left was a full length mirror and her reflection staring right back at her. She looked out of place standing in this big house. She hadn't been inside her grandmothers house since her dad left. Actually, she hadnt really been anywhere since he left. Joey pushed passed her and ran up the stairs, disappearing when he turned the corner. “They brought all your furniture while we were gone, but I was thinking..” Before her grandmother could continue, Joey came running back down the stairs. “Layla! Our rooms our epic! Come check it out!” She looked back up at her grandma and she held a sweet smile. “Go check it out.” There was too many stairs for her to be going this fast. She thought she was going to trip but before she had time to, she reached the top. She followed Joey down the hall until she reached the end of the hallway. She pushed the door open slightly and saw all her favorite posters covering the walls. She walked farther inside her new room and saw a bed with girly sheets covering it, strangely she actually like them. In the left corner of the room, she saw a mac book sitting on top of a white desk. No way.. Thats mine? She walked a little too quickly towards the desk and fell onto the spinny chair. She let out a small laugh. This is mine.
Before she knew it, she had spent 2 hours in her room customizing play lists and her mac book. She was brought back to reality when her grandmother came and sat on her bed. “Thank you.” She said sincerely. “Anything for my grandchildren.” After a long pause she spoke again, “I've set up all of the paper work for your school. Were going to meet with the principal tomorrow, and after I would like to take you and Joey shopping for some new clothes.” New. Her eyebrows furrowed together, “Why are you doing all of this? Taking us in, spending so much money, why do you care? Its not like we have been around you very much. The last time we saw you was almost 4 years ago..” Her grandmas face grew soft. “Honey.. I have tried so hard for the last four years to get to see you guys and your mother. Trevor was a really bad influence on her. I am so sorry for what you and Joey went through, but im going to try my best to make it better.” Her mom was gone, how could anything be better. Not wanting to argue, she leaned back into her seat. “I love what you did to this room for me. I would have never put those sheets on my bed, but they're actually pretty cute.” They both laughed. “I figured you needed a little girly to even out those punk rock posters.” The sound of the doorbell rang through the house. “That's probably the pizza I ordered, do you mind getting it for me? The tip is on the counter.” With a nod of her head, she made her way back downstairs and grabbed the money off the kitchen counter. When she opened the door, the pizza boy was typing away on his cell phone with the boxes easily held in one hand. “Uhm.” she couldnt think of what to say. “Oh!” The boy had weird pinkish, purple hair that stood out in all different directions. “This is the right address right?” He asked. “Y-yeah. It is. We, uhm. Yeah, thats my pizza.” You're making a fool out of yourself. “Great, Here you are.” She grabbed the pizzas and without thinking, she slammed the door shut. Shit, the tip. She quickly opened the door back up and the boy was leaning against the door frame smugly. “You're kinda required to give us a tip.” He said, confidence oozing out of his mouth. “Yeah, here.” She shoved the cash in his hands then shut the door fiercely, for the second time.
