Shelter

We headed north for a day, or what I thought was north, to be honest, I couldn't tell. The pain from my leg was making my mind blur and each passing minute was pure agony. Nutmeg was beginning to tire and the pups, well I had to pick them up a while back, they kept on falling behind. I suppose I'm lucky in some ways, one of them being that it's spring and not winter but the wind is still cold, it's always so cold...

We would need to find shelter soon or else we would freeze tonight I could already feel the air get colder, looking around I wasn't surprised to find no possible shelter insight all I could see were trees. The sun had begun to set, this was bad for once in my life I was more scared than ever. If I didn't find shelter big enough for all of us then we would die tonight of the cold, I hate the cold, I have lived with it for all of my life, whether it be physical or emotional...

Looking around again I tried peaking past the thick growth of trees, this forest was full of them, everywhere you looked there was always a tree in sight, not a rock nor a bush just a tree...THERE! Behind a tree, a large cave or rather a hole stuck out, it looked big enough to get Nutmeg in. Pulling Negmegs mane, slightly to the left, she started trotting towards the cave it was actually hidden quite well.

The tree blocked out most ways to view the cave and the single bush by the cave entrance made it look like it was just a giant rock. The cave itself was damp and far from humid but it would do, it was big enough that Nutmeg could stand easily in it and deep enough that we would be hidden from the environment. Sliding off of Nutmeg I pull her in more before I put the pups down, they were already asleep. Placing my hand on the rock I was quite surprised to find that it was mostly smooth as if it had been manmade but it wasn't. Breaking myself away from the wall I grab my bag before I pull out a bedroll and a few emergency blankets, which just so happened to be 3 of them and were quite insulated.

Putting them against the wall I look around for a proper place for the fire that we would need for tonight, not just for warmth but for safety. I didn't know what type of animals roamed these woods, maybe a pack of wolves did and I was in their territory or maybe a bear roamed these woods, I didn't know.

Looking over towards the entrance of the cave, I nod. This would be a good place for the fire, I would just have to make sure that the wind wouldn't blow it out. Limping outside I used the wall to hold my weight against it before I look around for any size of the rock, wood would come after but right now I need something to circle my fire with. I was in luck a few paces away under a tree lay some pretty good-sized rocks, limping over to them I picked up as many as I could carry before I hobbled back to my hole.

Throwing the rocks down I lean against the wall panting as I could already feel my legs weakening from the pain. Sliding down the wall I rest against it before I start placing the rocks into sort of a circle shape, the rocks weren't perfect and if I was lucky they wouldn't explode when I start the fire.

Getting up slowly I lean against the wall as I look to the tree, right beside me a few feet away, dry small branches of oak wood lay scattered around the base of the tree. Kneeling I pick up an armful of branches before I scoot back on my bumb towards the pit, dumping the branches inside they were big enough to be the size of my arm but the ends were thin enough to make good kindling. Grabbing a few small pieces off of the twigs I arrange them in a nest shape before I lean back, grabbing my bag from against the wall and fishing out the flint and steel that lay hidden in one of the pockets.

Putting the nest down in front of me I start flicking the flint against the steel but after a few minutes, the steel started getting hot, sighing I place the flint and steel down to take a break. Looking down to my leg I wasn't surprised to find a few stitches had come undone and blood had begun to ooze out of the wound.

Shaking my head I pick up the flint and steel before trying again and finally, after a few tries a spark hit the kindling and a small fire started to burn. Throwing the flint and steel down I grab the nest before I start to blow on it strongly watching as it grew larger. Placing it into the pit I watched as the small flame became a raging fire, laughing in relief I look outside only to find it was pitch dark. Grabbing a big plastic sheet from inside my bag I grab some rope before I start tying a cover over the cave which connected to the tree. By the time I was done half the entrance was covered, the outside of the cave was rough and textured so I was able to tie the rope around one of the spikes.

Hobbling over to Nutmeg, who just so happened to be asleep as well, I grab a blanket before placing it over her. Grabbing my bedroll I crawl inside of it before I lean back against Nutmeg, using her as a pillow. Looking to the pups, I whistle softly making them open their eyes before I whistle again catching their attention, I motion them over before I grab a second blanket. Watching them walk over I throw the blanket over them as they curl up into a pile.

Leaning back against Nutmeg, I look down at my leg seeing it had stopped bleeding. Sighing I close my eyes thinking over what I would need to do tomorrow, this leg won't stop me from surviving ... I had to, I wasn't just gonna curl up and die in this cave. I would survive and thrive.

Tomorrow would be food and water, I would need to find a water source that was clean and wasn't still frozen from the winter, I have yet to come across any prey, they must have been scared away by the helicopter crash and explosion...talking about the helicopter I would need to go back there and check for anything useful, maybe a map survived or the radio, hell even some clothes would be nice.

Opening my eyes again I grab my bag before I start taking everything out of it, I should keep check of what I have.

1 small medical kit, a few things missing.
1 Rope and functioning climbing gear.
1 solar recharge torch.
3 bottles of water.
2 cans of corned beef...Yum...
2 sets of spare clothes.
2 jars of coffee.
1 bar of soap.
1 flint and steel.

I had absolutely nothing to cook with, guess I would be braaiing everything, for now, hopefully, I can maybe find some clay nearby or make some I can use to make a pan and plate.
And hopefully, these clothes will still fit me, I made this emergency bag about 5 years ago, sighing I put everything bag into my back before I close my eyes again.

Listening to the sounds of the night, I fall asleep against Nutmeg, knowing I have a full day ahead of me tomorrow...
