Three days later ...
A cold breeze wakes me from my sleep as the moonlight shines in through the entrance of the cave, looking to the fire pit I wasn't surprised to find the fire was out. Groaning softly I slowly get up using the wall and walk out to grab some more branches for the flame. Bending down to grab a few of them I freeze when I see deer tracks in the ground, and they looked to be quite new. Looking in the direction to where the tracks lead I smile to myself before I go back to picking up more branches.Walking back inside I quickly restart my fire before I lay back in my sleeping bag, looking to my left I could see the rise and fall of the puppies chests. Once again they were all piled up on each other like a puppy pile, cute. Looking behind me I could hear and feel Nutmeg's slow breathing. I could always count on her to come back to me, she would never leave me she was a loyal animal.
Laying down on my back again I close my eyes knowing that tomorrow would hopefully be the first day I get to hunt something other than birds. Over the past 3 days, I have fallen into the routine of waking up, taking Nutmeg to get berries, hunting birds, training the pups, and then preparing the twigs for the night. Over the 3 days, I have made over 27 more arrows to fit in my bag meaning I have 35 arrows in total.
Shutting my mind off I slowly drift back to sleep to the sound of the crackling fire. The morning light was the first thing to wake me, I was awake a lot sooner than normal given the normal time I woke up was when the sun was right above me aka midday or so, guess I'm just excited. Sitting up I slowly stretch before I get out the sleeping bag to look at my leg, due to me washing it every day the chances of infection lessened, thankfully, it doesn't hurt as much anymore as well but again I have been resting most of the day and night so that helps.
Leaning against the wall I make my way over to the fire before sitting down grabbing the cold bird meat that hangs over it. Leftovers for breakfast would have to do, I have deer to hunt right now. Getting up I walk over to my bag before I look at my change of clothes sighing, it has been nearly a week since I have been stranded here. No helicopters or search parties have come, guess the government doesn't want to waste the effort of searching for the crashed helicopters and bodies of their workers...
Grabbing the clothes I quickly get changed, looking down to myself as I wear a workout suit with some takkies, I look at my dirty clothes before I move them to a corner of the cave ill deal with them later. Picking my bag up, since I have yet to make a quiver for my arrows so I have to carry them in my bag, I put it over my shoulders before I look to Nutmeg only to find her not behind me where she would normally be sleeping, walking outside I whistle lowly.
Having only to wait a few seconds I watch Nutmeg come trotting over to me appearing to be in a pleasant mood, she always did like summer more than winter surprisingly this summer seems to be a lot warmer than usual. Petting her head gently I go to her side before hopping onto her back, with my leg being a lot less painful I'm able to jump and even walk short distances.
Grabbing hold of her mane I gently direct her to follow the tracks I saw last night, moving in a fast trot she follows them as I look around to memorize the way we are going, sure I could just follow back by our footprints but it would be better to know my way around. Unlike with the helicopter where I was going left, I'm now going right which didn't really help.
Shaking my head of my thoughts I continue to look around before looking down to see we are still following them and then much to my surprise and relief more deer tracks started to appear to join up with the original deer tracks, guess it was a herd that was moving across the forest.
Jumping off of Nutmeg I slowly start following the tracks on foot, I didn't wish to scare away any of the deer, maybe I'll come across a stag, that would feed the pups and me for a few days before the meat would go rotten. Lowering myself to the ground as the tracks appeared to be fresher the longer I followed them, I slowed more towards a bush to peek through it, and there standing in the open stood 3 deer and a stag. The rest of the herd must be somewhere else since I could count more than 4 hoof prints.
Slowly moving my bag I grab my bow and arrow before I stand quietyly readying my arrow as take deep breaths calming my heart, releasing both my breath and the arrow I watch as it shoots across the air and into the leg of one of the deer, spooked by the sudden attack the deers fled but the wounded one left behind a trail of blood, it was only a matter of time before it would be bleeding to death but then the meat would be horrible.
