Chapter 27

"So what took you guys so long? I was about to starve." Luke said in between mouthfuls, licking his fingers and grabbing another handful. I noticed the blush on Mary's cheeks and I raised my eyebrows at her but she avoided looking at me. I smirked and looked at Michael, waiting for an explanation.
"We went and got chips and then this old lady came up to us and-" Michael covered Addy's mouth with his large hand and chuckles nervously.
"And what?" Calum asked with his mouthful, I don't think any of the boys saw what Jess and I are seeing. I glanced at Jess and she was already grinning at me. We are so going to grill Mary later.
"Anyway! Let's eat!" Mary changed the topic and clapped her hands, rubbing them together and grabbing a handful of chips.
•Mary's POV•
Tonight is not going to end well, I groaned to myself as I imagined the questions the girls were going to ask and walked down the hallway to find Jess.
"Mary! Guess what?" Jess jumped in front of me from out of nowhere.
"Jesus Christ. What?"
"No. Guess!" She crossed her arms.
"You-" She got me off by squealing.
"MUM SAID WE CAN GET AN APARTMENT WITH ADDY AND KATHY!" She jumped up and down while it took me a few seconds to process the information she just gave me.
"OH MY GOD!" I squealed and jumped with her, we were interrupted by a knock on the door. I ran to it and looked through the spy hole and saw Kathy standing outside, she must've left Addy with the boys.
"Hello!" Kathy said excitedly when I opened the door, she ran over to the couch and dumped her bag on it. She then begun emptying the contents of it.
"How much shit did you bring?" Jess laughed as she finished emptying it.
"Only the essentials, of course." She smirked and gestured to the lollies, chocolate, microwaveable popcorn and movies she brought with her.
"Nice." Jess nodded her head in approval.
"Have you heard?" I asked Kathy, her smiling face then turned into a worried one.
"No, what happened?"
"Cassie said we can get an apartment together! You can sell your house and get the money to split rent with us!" Jess squealed.
"Really!?"
"YES!" Jess and I replied in unison.
"Woah. Everything is finally coming together!" Kathy's eyes begun to water and we all just stood there smiling.
"Ok enough of that, we have other stuff we need to talk about.." She looked at me and wiggled her eyebrows. We all headed over to the couch and sat down while Jess made the popcorn. Once she was back and we had blankets and food, the interrogation began.
"So what really happened?" Jess asked, moving in closer.
"Nothing really."
"Mary." Kathy stared me down and I groaned.
"An old lady came up to us in the fish and chip store and said we were a cute couple and that she wished us all the best in the future and when I went to tell her that we weren't dating, Michael wrapped his arm around my waist and kissed me on the cheek and thanked her." I finished while blushing and stuffing my face into the nearest pillow.
"And what happened after that?"
"Well we kinda just walked around holding hands while we waited for the chips and then he kissed me on the cheek and told me he liked spending time with me."
"What did you say?" My eyes connected with Jess's and she remembered.
"Uhm, I didn't say much." I laughed nervously.
"Oh c'mon you must've said something!" Kathy pressed. My breathing quickened and I ran into the bathroom and locked the door.
"Mary?" I heard Kathy's voice through the thickness of the door. I whimpered in response, remembering what happened that night.
"Kathy, I need to tell you something." I listened to Jess's voice through the door and covered my hands over my ears not wanting to relive the night. I felt hot tears falling down my face and knew it was going to happen again and there was nothing that I could do to stop it.
•Jess's POV•
"About two years ago Mary had a boyfriend named Kane and he was the shit. Like every girl at school wanted him. Mary was the most desired girl in school and he was the most desired boy, they were the power couple. Anyways, when they finally started getting serious and dating and shit - something happened. I don't know if something happened to him to change him or if he had always been like this in the past, but he turned into a major asshole. He begun abusing Mary - sexually and physically - and she didn't know what to do. She finally found the strength to end it. Everything was ok for a few weeks and then he showed up one night. He was drunk and Mary was home alone, I was out at a concert with some friends. He was trying to get back with Mary but she wouldn't have it. He ended up breaking her wrist and fracturing her ribs before leaving. I came home to her on the ground in the front yard and I didn't know what to do. For about two years she had nightmares on and off, it was the same each time. They stopped a few months ago but when we stayed the night at the boys house after we had a fight with you, she had one. She hasn't dated anyone since and I can't imagine how hard she's trying to act normal around Michael." Jess frowned and my heart dropped when I imagined what she was going through.
