All I could think about the next day was that Justin liked someone in High School and it was not me. But of course, it wasn't me. How could it be. I was the one who he only talked to him when Trevor was busy. I am the girl that no one ever liked enough to ask out. I wasn't one of the popular cheer leaders or dancers on the dance team. I was just the girl who went MIA at the end of High School. And Lily didn't warn me.
Both Justin and Lilly texted me about the groups plans for today. They're roller skating at the infamous Sugar World Rink and Games. Known for producing many skating injuries. They are very relaxed about the rules. I can't remember a time when the carving of the single bedazzled roller skate didn't stand behind the red bullseye of target. The skating rink is the main attraction of the place. No one hardly every goes just for the arcade.
I didn't reply to either of their texts. I asked my mom to drop me off at the rink. I held on tight to the door handle with my eyes closed the entire ride. My mom's driving scares me the most. She always turns her head to look at me when she talks, taking her eyes off the road. She questioned why she was taking me and not Lily, but I didn't give her any details. I walked in with my arms crossed, wrapped in my zip up hoodie. I caught my reflection in the glass doors. My high waisted black leggings accentuated the tube connected to my butt. Thankfully, I brought a jacket. I spotted everyone right away. Justin's dark brown hair and sporty outfit, Lily's long French braids, Hannah's golden locks, Trevor's bleached blond curls and I saw David flailing his arms as soon as I opened the door.
Lily saw me first and everyone quickly followed. I put a smile on my face, partially fake. I couldn't help smiling at David messing around on the rink. He was the only one skating.
"I didn't know you were coming" Lily questioned "How did you get here; I would have picked you up"
Justin stared waiting to hear my response
"My mom dropped me off" I confirm
"Oh" Lily says
She looked hurt. I was too. I was not sure the degree of my hurt, but I knew it was there. I kept my arms crossed to show to my anger. I went towards the rink to get David's attention. The only person in the group I wanted to be around.
"You look like you're having a lot of fun." I smirk
"And you look miserable. Go get some skates. I'll wait here." He assures
I walked over to the renting counter and Justin quickly ran up behind me
"Hey" he blurted
"Hey" I monotoned back. A long silence followed
"You shouldn't really be skating. You could fall on your stomach"
"I'll be fine" I assured stepping up to the front of the line. I kept my unbothered composure.
Despite having many firsts this summer, roller-skating was not one them. I've been many times with my older brother, Sam, before he became too cool to skate. David waited for me at the railing like he said. As I walked over to him, I noticed I have never seen him without a smile on his face. I want to always be that happy.
"Who's ready to party!" David yelled loud enough for the entire rink to hear. With the disco lights and dim lighting, it did feel like a party. Even if it was only noon. I put on the white skates with blue wheels and grabbed David's hand. It took a while to remember what I was doing but once I did, I was even better then David.
Hannah and Trevor circled around arms entangled. Hannah was not so good, but she kept up. Lily and Justin circled the rink together, but I did not want to pay too much attention to Justin or Lily. I focused on having fun, drama free.
