Texas had felt twice as hotter than it was when the team worked a case in Laredo two years ago. stepping into the air conditioned Precinct 1 of Maverick County, Prentiss couldn't help but want to finish the case as quickly as possible so that she could escape the harsh heat.

Rudi Valquez, the lead detective on the case, surfaced from his office almost immediately when the team entered the building as a group.

JJ quickly introduced each of them, and soon after began talking with the office's media liaison on the upcoming press conference. They had enough time to go over the case on the jet to have a basic understanding of how the Unsub targeted his victims.

The rest of the team filtered into the designated office area they were given to work in for the time being. Valquez followed behind with a semi-full box of case files that might've been linked the one they were on.

"senor, ten piedad, se esta quemando ahi fuera", Detective Valquez sighed, having caught a wind of the heat outside. He had lived in Texas for almost five years, but was sure he'd never get over the boiling heat. Emily let out an understanding laugh. "cuentamelo, casi me derrito caminando del auto hasta aqui", she responded. Valquez smiled at her response, surprised that she spoke Spanish.

"You're funny, agent Prentiss", he spoke in English this time before they both shared a smile. The rest of the team pretended not to be curious what the two were talking about while unpacking their case load.

Reid and Rossie got straight to work on victimology, while Morgan would go with JJ to talk to the victim's families. Prentiss would go with Valquez and his partner to the latest crime scene. The team was one agent short since Hotch had to stay behind to care for Jack, leaving Morgan to fill his shoes for this case.

.....

Emily's gray suit jacket was long since abandoned back at the precinct, the heat becoming almost unbearable for her. Her white tank top was smoothed over her flat belly and tucked neatly into her pants. She was thankful that her bra caught the sweat that was surely pooling under her breasts as she spoke with detective Valquez outside of the latest victim's town-house.

Kaniel Reynolds lived by himself, save for his two french bulldogs that had been staying at his neighbor's place until he finished the project he was working on for one of his employers.

Apparently it had been too important for him to be distracted by two pets, but it was common for him to have someone in the neighborhood dog sit for him when he did get projects this big. They weren't there to alert him of an intruder in the house, she thought. In that case, he must've knew when the dogs would be gone.

When the two of them finished inspecting Reynold's house, they quickly boarded the SUV and headed back to the precinct. Emily had more than enough to report back to Morgan. The case might've gone as fast as she hoped.

Stepping back into the precinct, she immediately went to Morgan in their workspace and began filling him in.

.....

"Alright guys" Morgan spoke to the tired group of profilers. "It's going on 3am. You all head over to the hotel and get some sleep. I'll catch up later".
The team knew that he'd usually take on twice his work load on cases where he filled Hotch's position.

It was stressful for all of them to be one person down, but it especially got Morgan good. They knew he'd stay a few hours later to file extra reports and possibly talk to Strauss, who always seemed to micro manage the team on cases he supervised.

Almost everyone had quickly packed their files and got up, eager to regain the energy they had lost that day. Prentiss let out a stretched yawn and squeezed her eyes shut while packing a few folders into her computer bag. She just knew she'd sleep well tonight.
