Seinfeld: I guess maybe some little problems could arise
Elaine: Well there are always a few
Seinfeld: I mean if anything happened and... we couldn't be friends the way we are now, that would really be bad
Elaine: Devastating!
Seinfeld: Because this is very good
Elaine: And that would be good
Seinfeld: That would be good too, the idea is to combine the this... and the that
- Dialogue from Seinfeld
...............
Emily's newly installed tires rolled over the damp roads of D.C. effortlessly as she followed her GPS's instructions to Dereck's flat. She and Reid had been over to his place before for drinks and (usually) burgers, but tonight was different. She and Dereck would finally be able to talk about what happened last week in Texas, and quite frankly, what's been happening since the moment she'd joined the team three years ago.
Emily scoffed to herself. Three years, she thought. Three years of stifling these little girl feelings for her coworker, trying not to give herself away every time they talked about anything other than work. She knew three years was enough time for any normal person to get over a crush, but suspected that her energy when around him said that she harbored more than just a typical crush for Dereck.
It was going on 10:30, the sky already dark save for the few stars that showed through the clouds. At this point, unprofessional wasn't even the word to describe herself. She was sure that if anyone on the team, if Hotch - no, if Strauss knew where she was headed at this time of night, it would be an entire thing. A long line of questions and dirty looks from the older woman, and a stern lecture from Hotch on why the relationships on this team had to remain platonic.
Emily almost scrunched her face in disdain at the word. Platonic, she thought. How could anyone expect any of the team members to keep strictly platonic relationships with each other when they practically lived together. All this platonic shit is for movies and TV shows, we're real people for crying out loud, she thought to herself.
That was the last thing flying through her head as she pulled into Dereck's guest parking spot and found an elevator that went to his floor.
Dereck's door was already unlocked when she came in, since she texted him on the short ride up to his floor that she was in the building. It was weird not knowing what he was thinking the entire drive to his flat, but now that she was mere seconds away from seeing him outside of their work's light, all she wanted to do was call and tell him that she was feeling sick just to get out of this.
Dereck was at the door, though, before she could change her mind. Everything about him seemed relaxed; he was dressed in plaid green pajama pants and a white long sleeve sleeping sweater, with a beer in one hand and his phone in the other. Yet when Emily made eye contact with him, something told her he might've been just as anxious as she was.
His thin, dark lips smiled down at her, though it didn't reach his eyes. She thought that maybe he was actually nervous about this, but not for the same reasons she was. She inwardly sighed at the thought of his feelings for her not going beyond sex and work. It made her ears redden with hurt and anger to say the least.
"Princess, you can stand there and stare all night or come in and get comfortable on my sofa - I don't bite", he said with a wink as he stalked over to the fridge and grabbed another beer. He was barefoot, while his tall build moved from the kitchenette to the sofa, patting a spot next to him and looking up at her. He was adorable, his warm brown eyes staring right into hers.
