Dazai stared at the night sky. It was lit up with what could be millions of millions of stars.
"You see that," Odasaku pointed towards the stars. "That's proof that no matter how high up you go, there will always be something greater to reach."
Dazai remembered his late friend's words. Odasaku meant a lot to Dazai, he was the only one Dazai actually enjoyed being around. Well, him and one other person, but for a completely different reason.
"Oi, shitty Dazai!" Chuuya Nakahara walked onto the balcony holding a bottle of wine. Yes, Dazai enjoyed being with Chuuya, but only because Chuuya was quite vulnerable to Dazai's teasing.
The sound of jazz music swept out through the door, the Port Mafia was celebrating and Dazai was in no mood to join the party.
Chuuya leaned onto the balcony, "what's up with you?"
"..."
Chuuya continued to sip away the wine.
"Chuuya..."
"Ha?"
"Look up there," Dazai pointed at the sky. "What do you see?"
Chuuya stared up at the sky with Dazai intently. The stars seemed to shine brighter than before, the sound of everything around faded to nothing but the wind. Just then, a shooting star passed by. And for a moment, nothing seemed impossible.
......
"Is that a rhetorical question?" Chuuya ruined the mood as he slurped on his wine.
As much as it would've annoyed anyone, Dazai chuckled. "You and Odasaku always had the most unique responses to things."
Chuuya did not understand what Dazai was trying to say, and was totally unaware of the fact that Dazai was reminiscing over the loss of his friend.
"Stars carry the answers to everything. That's where I'm going. Someday, I will reach the stars, no matter how far I'll have to travel; that's where I'm headed."
Dazai stared into space.
"Why?" The little redhead said as Dazai turned to look at him. "Don't you already have enough? You say that not even a king's worth of diamond and gold will satisfy you, so you want what no one else can ever have huh?"
Chuuya lifted his head and stared into Dazai's eyes, "that's some selfish bs really."
"Well that's not the only reason I wanna go up there for"
"What's the other?"
"It's obvious to get away from you Chuuya, and then I can look down on you and laugh at how smaller you'll look then."
Dazai grinned as Chuuya burst out in a fit on insults. "Yea, well if that's the case, I'll gladly kick you and your bandaged ass to the frickin moon!"
Dazai laughed as Chuuya stomped back into the hall, "if you want I could take you with me!" Dazai called out playfully.
"PISS OFF, BASTARD!"
Dazai turned towards the night sky, smiled, and went back inside too.
The next day, he left the Port Mafia.
