Chapter 2: Home Sweet Home!
***
"Is Ruby gonna be okay? When can we see her? She's gonna be okay, right?" I rapidly ask the strange man questions while pacing back-and-forth in the waiting room.
"She's going to be fine! Sit down and relax! Besides we need to catch up on a lot of things," The man pats the seat beside of him but I decide to be smart and sit across from him. It might've been rude but I'm not getting that close to a stranger.
"How did you know that I was, well, myself when I first came here?" This has been bothering me since the moment he said my name. I haven't seen nor talk to a relative in years. Plus I look dirty and starved.
"I am the one who brought you to the foster care agency. I actually run the place. So I kept a close eye on you and 'Ruby'." The man folds his arms together. He looks really intimidating.
I stand up from where I am sitting then slam my hands on the coffee table that separates the two of us.
"First of all, the employees you hired are freaking insane! They wanted to POISON us! Second of all, if I'm your so called daughter then why didn't I live in luxury with you instead of that hideous place!" I yell at him, not caring if other people heard.
"Actually, it was all an act," The man leans forward with a sinister grin on his face. "You should be smart enough to know, cameras are placed in each room, including the vents. I gave some trusted workers extra money to say those things."
"Why, and how did you know where to find me?" Things weren't adding up and all I want to do is find Ruby then run away.
"I wanted to test your instinct; how you would react if you were faced with danger. And I'm not telling you how I found you." The man walks closer to me as he speaks. I notice a golden nametag above his left breast pocket.
"Grayson Swift?" I say his name out loud without thinking. He stops walking then opens his mouth as if to say something.
"Mr.Swift the patient is ready to be seen! Go to room 204 it's on the 8th floor!" The lady screams from behind the desk. She startled us both according to Grayson's expression but he quickly removes it in exchange for a stern one.
He firmly grabs my wrist then walks us both to the elevator. I don't bother resisting since he's taking me to Ruby so I enter the elevator with him. After he lets go of my wrist I move as far away from him as possible. We are the only two in the elevator and it makes me feel highly uncomfortable.
"So...what's your favorite animal?" Grayson decides to break the ice by asking this idiotic question.
"I don't know. I haven't been to a zoo in years. I guess a wolf would be my favorite." I shrug during my answer. I remember seeing a mother wolf protecting her pup at a zoo when I was younger and happy. The thought brought a smile to my face.
"Maybe one day I could take you and your friend to the zoo after she's feeling better." Grayson suggests as the elevator opens up.
A group of doctors walk in. I reluctantly move closer to Grayson since he's the only person I know in this entire elevator.
I tug on the end of his sleeve to get his attention. "You never told me why you didn't abopt me 10 years ago."
"I wasn't ready to be a father at the time and I needed to wait for my youngest son to grow up before I could bring a stranger home." Grayson sighs, looking slightly apologetic.
"How old is he?" I ask as I look down at my feet.
"10. My wife went into labor the day your mother and stepfather died." He responds with a sad tone in his voice.
