Chapter 3: Rules.

***

"We didn't know your favorite cake flavor so we ordered vanilla for Noah and chocolate for you but you can eat either one." Sydney says as she places two birthday cakes between Noah and I.

"I want chocolate!" Noah wines while looking at the chocolate cake in front of me. I switch the cakes so I now have the vanilla cake in front of me.

"You don't have to do that, sweetheart! You should decide what you want!" Sydney hurriedly places the cakes back in their original spots.

Noah pouts but doesn't say anything back to her. I look between both cakes carefully. I haven't eaten a piece of cake in years so I didn't really mind what flavor I got. But I really, really like chocolate. My mouth is practically drooling at the image of chocolate cake.

"I want chocolate!" I shout, memorized by the smell. I quickly glance at Noah who is on the verge of tears. "I-I don't mind sharing." I force these words out of me. I honestly wanted the entire cake to myself but I was told that sharing is caring or whatever.

"Mm'kay I'll slice you two a big piece of chocolate cake!" Sydney smiles while placing two decorated plates in front of us. "What flavor do you want Ruby?"

"I want vanilla!" Piper screams before Ruby had the chance to answer.

"That's nice but she was asking Ruby," I furrow my eyebrows at Piper.

"Well she didn't answer in time and there's two uncut cakes that need to be eaten." Piper rolls her eyes as she's responding. Unlike when Grayson did it, I am not amused.

"Because you didn't give her a chance to!" I snap at her. Ruby tugs on the end of my dress sleeve but I ignore her for once in my life.

"Calm down. You two just became sisters and you're already at each others throat." Grayson hushed me up once he said sisters.

"Sisters?" I question Grayson while staring at Piper.

"I wanted to wait for later to say this but," Grayson places a golden envelope in front of Ruby and myself. Ruby hesitates to open it but I rip mines right open. It's a certificate for adoption. "Welcome to the family, Ruby Swift and Alexandra Swift."

"What?" Piper gets out of her seat then looks at Grayson with anger in her eyes. "You barely have enough time for the kids you already have and now you're adding two? This is unbelievable! I hate this family!" Piper storms off towards the direction of the stairs. After some time we all hear a loud slamming sound.

Aiden scoots out from under the table then stands up. "I'll go talk to her but she does have a point, dad. Not that I dislike having Alex and Ruby around. It's just...you should've spent more time with us when you had the chance to." Aiden walks away and Grayson sighs heavily.

"Can I keep my last name?" I ask, ignoring the high tension in the room.

"What? You mean Parmer? Of course you can't! When you go to school you are to be introduced as Aiden's sister so you can't have a different last name!" Grayson sternly raises his voice at me.

"I owe my father enough to keep his last name. Just introduce me as his cousin." I cross my arms then look at Grayson impatiently. "And yes I know you are my real dad but I see him more as one."

"You are under my care now so you are going to keep my last name."

"Why can't I just-"

"END OF DISCUSSION!" Grayson yells which causes Noah to cower behide of me.

"Fine but I will never answer to Alexandra Swift. Not here, at school, or anywhere. I'm a Parmer and I'm gonna stay a Parmer!" I stand up abruptly but then slowly sit back down. I'm not leaving without at least 3 pieces of cake.
