Chapter 1: Hello Freedom!
***
"Wake up, birthday girl!" Ruby screams in my ears. I immediately wake up because of the fact that we are sleeping in the same bed and her mouth is inches away from my ear.
"You know how much I hate this day, right?" I groan while pushing Ruby away from me. Every birthday I get reminds me of what happened. I hate it so much.
"You're turning 16 today! That's like huge!" Ruby excitingly screams once again but I hush her up so no caretakers know we are up this early. If we are found out we get to start working. How fun!
"Let's go for a walk," I get out of bed then start stretching. Usually we can leave unnoticed for a short amount of time.
"I can't walk. I can barely stand and we can't get outside with you carrying the wheelchair and me." Ruby frowns while rubbing her legs back and forth. The accident she was in left her permanentately in a wheelchair. The bruises faded away overtime though.
"Then I'll just carry you. We can leave Mr.Chair on its ass for a bit!" I joke while getting down on one knee. The easiest way to get out of here with Ruby is with a piggy back ride.
Ruby hops on my back then wraps her arms around my neck. There's an old vent above Ruby's bed that can open easily if tugged once or twice. I jump on her bed as she reaches for the vent. It takes a couple of jumps before Ruby is fully able to remove the cover of the vent. Ruby then moves up my body so she can reach the vent more easily. She's basically sitting on my shoulders while I try my best to stand still so we both don't tumble over.
"Do one more jump, Lexy!" Ruby orders me. I gulp then squeeze on her ankles as I jump up high. She makes it into the vent with ease.
"Don't worry about pulling me up. I got this! Just back away from the entrance!" Once Ruby is out of my view I back as far away from the vent as possible then launch myself forward. I hang from the vent and start to pull myself up.
"You sure you got this?" Ruby grins while tracing her fingers on the back of my hand. Great now I need to scratch them!
I struggle but I manage to pull myself fully into the vent. I proceed to scratch the back of my hands rapidly while Ruby giggles. "You remember the way, Lady bug?" I laugh as I pinch Ruby's nose.
"We've been through the vents like a billion times, so duh!" Ruby jokingly rolls her eyes as she replies.
"Lead the way then," I nudge my elbow on Ruby's shoulder then she turns around and begins crawling to our destination. On the way there I hear mumbling coming from the left side of the vents.
"Do you hear that mumbling sound?" I ask Ruby as I hold her feet to prevent her from crawling.
"Yeah, why are you going to investigate or something?" Ruby questions after I let go of her feet.
"I'm thinking about it. Can I trust you to stay here for awhile?" I cautiously ask Ruby. I know nothing could happen to her in the vents but I still worry about her.
"Just be safe. Don't make a sound and don't touch the vent opening. If it falls or if you fall then we are both screwed!" Ruby warns me then motions me to go.
I turn towards the left then start crawling. The sounds get louder and once I reach the opening I can make out words.
"This place is getting crowded fast."
"We might have to get rid of the kids who've been here the longest."
"Like the teenager and the crippled kid?" I felt insulted for Ruby by how he addressed people like her.
