Caleb woke up dreadful as his alarm clock rang at his nightstand. He slapped the device until the irritating noise was put to a halt, then he pulled himself from beneath the covers, readying himself for the first day of school.
Caleb stood in the shower, letting the steamed water trickle down his long, brunette hair before slobbishly adding shampoo. Elsie was in the kitchen in uniform and prepping a small breakfast for Caleb as he walked downstairs to the living room, being able to smell the bacon and toast from the second floor.
“Good morning, sunshine.” Elsie spoke with a smirk as the less than enthusiastic and tiresome boy moped through to the kitchen breakfast bar.
“Are you excited for your first day?” She questioned over exaggeratedly as she placed a piece of bacon onto a plate in front of him.
“Sure am.” He placed two elbows to the countertop, holding his head.
Elsie huffed a chuckle. “You act like high school is so miserable.”
“Because it is.” He said with a mouthful of toast.
“You know, if you stopped being such a downer about everything maybe you’d make a friend today.” She informed. “Or maybe at some point in your life.” She muttered the rest of the sentence.
Caleb wasn’t phased by her remark. “I’m not too keen on making friends, Els.”
“You’re not too keen about anything.” She laughed at his words.
“Friends are the last thing I care for. I have you and this strip of bacon.” He held the bacon in the air, eating it as if he were a dog eating from his owner’s hand.
“You’re gross.” She shook her head as he devoured the strip like a pet. “I’m driving you to school today.” She added.
“What for? It’s in walking distance.” Caleb swallowed his orange juice.
Elsie shrugged. “First days are always exciting.”
Caleb narrowed his brows. “Yeah sure.”
Elsie sighed with a shake of her head. “Just go get your backpack so we can go.”
Elsie pulled to the front of a building which was scattered with students. Avelak High, a castle-like building with concrete stairs leading to the front entry, was much like any old high school. Elsie parked along the road where the rest of student’s parents said their goodbyes to their children on their first day.
“Good luck out there.” Elsie joked as she patted his jacket shoulder.
Caleb hauled himself out of the passenger seat and began to head towards the front entry of the school. On his walk he passed students in which he planned to have no association with. He managed to slip through the crowded door without being questioned whether or not he was a new student. Once inside, he was welcomed to hallway filled with exactly what he had been expecting, though wishing his expectations would crash.
The lockers along the hallway were painted royal blue as the walls themselves were painted an obnoxious shade of yellow. Obvious freshmen filled the scene hysterically trying to map out the school that had seemed so much larger to them. Caleb reached his locker, which fortunately enough was at the front of the school and close to the exit. He threw his backpack inside, taking nothing to class with him. It was the first day, what assignments would they be doing?
“Caleb?”
He heard a voice from across the hall which sounded like a soft feminine speak. He turned slowly, not knowing there was a human in sight to know of who he was yet.
