Caleb hadn’t been slightly moved by the notion of a new high school. He hated the regular clique tradition and found the thought of high school so damn structured. At past schools, Caleb had been known to skip school on a regular basis and often wandered off campus to some fast food joint around the corner. Elsie didn’t mind, as she had been the same way at his age. School authority knew him well; his short temper and rapid mouth usually left a couple jocks jumping him in the hallway. He was used to the occasional black eye and bloody lip.

Elsie worked her charm amongst the owner of a diner in town called Reggie’s Burgers. Luckily for Elsie, the owner was a middle aged man who had never been married; just her type. She managed to quickly get a position as a manager within days and knowing the details of how she pulled it off was off-putting to Caleb so he never bothered to ask.

Elsie had urged Caleb to phase every night since the move in a week ago. Caleb declined and ignored every suggestion she made, though. Elsie knew how thick headed her brother was, and knew simply suggesting an option wasn’t going to get through to him as easy as she wished it would be.

“You know, there’s a full moon in a couple of weeks.” Elsie began conversation in the kitchen as she tossed plates from the dishwasher into their designated cabinet homes. She wore her typical diner outfit; a yellow collared shirt sporting the diner’s logo which showed off her tattooed arms paired with black pants. Her long, curled and slightly untamed hair was knotted to her head, exposing her pale complexion and baby blues.

“Am I supposed to interested in this topic?” Caleb munched on an apple with a sarcastic tone. He sat in the living space which was divided by a chipping archway separating from the kitchen. Caleb sat in a slouching slugged position with his bare feet setting along the coffee table Elsie had salvaged from the garage.

“You should be.” She muttered as she entered the archway with her signature folded arms.

“Why? What for?” Caleb shrugged as he clicked off the television with a press of the remote.

“Do you really think just ignoring it will make it go away?” Elsie raised a brow.

“I’m not ignoring it.” Caleb stood from the couch with the core in hand. “I’m… Putting it off.”

“Ignoring?” Elsie argued.

Not ignoring.”

“Why are you so stubborn?” Elsie shook her head in question.

“It’s my choice, Elsie. If you had the ability to phase into a wolf, maybe you’d understand.” He spoke with attitude as he grazed passed her into the kitchen where he tossed the core into a trash can.

“You’re right.” She turned her position towards the kitchen where he stood. “I don’t understand it. But what I do understand is that you can’t run away from something thats in you.”

Caleb stood staring at the ceiling, picking pieces of left behind apple in his teeth.

“Maybe I’ll phase on my first day of school.” He spoke jokingly. “I don’t need a full moon to phase. Maybe I’ll make a couple of friends that way.”
Elsie blinked slowly in irritation. “You’re immature.” She murmured under her breath.

Not immature.” He corrected. “I prefer stubborn.” He licked the surface of his teeth.

Elsie decided to drop the topic, coming to the realization that his hard-headedness wasn’t able to be penetrated.

“I’m working until five.” She gazed over at the numbers on the stove. “I think you should take a walk into town and get to know the place.”
