Clary looked up quickly to meet Maryse's eyes. "We have once again lost him, but I, and the Clave agrees, believe that if we understood what happened to you there we have a better chance of locating where he might strike next."
"Strike?"
Maryse nodded slowly, "He's been attempting to raise the demon Agramon. He's better known as the demon of fear." Clary was confused, why could he possibly need from the Demon of Fear, but she simply nodded. "So, can you tell us anything? Maybe his plans that he confided with you? Things you might've overheard? Something irrelevant could very much be the most important thing and help us to find him."
Clary hesitated before speaking, "I don't know much about all of the Shadowhunter customs since I was not brought up with them. I simply got the basics from Valentine, but he mentions the Mortal Instruments and something about collecting them. He seemed determined to raise the Angel Raziel, although I'm not sure why. He also mentioned the world would be his, overrun by demons with him as their ruler. Sometimes at night I would hear screams of pain from another room, but they didn't sound human." Clary had given them that much, it was all the truth which was more difficult than it seems.
Maryse was nodding along in understanding. "Was there anyone else in there with you that you knew of?"
Clary swallowed hard, looking to the floor. She owed them the truth, here they were giving her a nice place to stay, food to eat and she was going to get them all killed. It was her duty to save her mother and protect Emma. But now she wanted to protect them as well, this family was so caring although she could tell it had its difficulties and more than half of the family despised her, she would save them from whatever Valentine wanted them killed for. But what about the demons overtaking the world? Her mother had always said the Clary had a large heart, but she didn't have the power to protect everyone by herself, but these people did and the least she could do was tell them the truth. Then why was she still hesitating? What was holding her back? Finally she looked up to see the family leaving the library, confused she stood up quickly before noticing the burning feeling once again on her forearm. She slowly turned to look at him meeting his eyes and holding them. Clary was usually good at reading people, but Jace was like a never ending wall. There was no way around or over top, you had to break through it. Little by little and bit by bit.
"Come on Clary, tell me what happened."
She shook her head slightly, "Like you care."
"I do care. What makes you think otherwise?"
Clary bit her lip. He sounded so sincere, but his face was emotionless.
His jaw clenched, looking at her. "Don't bite your lip."
Clary glanced at him surprised, but didn't release her lip.
Jace reached up then, his gaze completely focused on her lip and gently pulled it from between her teeth. The sparks from his touch enlightened her whole body in the fire. She shivered slightly, but enough that he saw allowing the smirk to return to his face.
"S-sorry. It's a habit."
He nodded slightly as a loud bang echoed throughout the Institute. Jace stood up quickly and Clary followed as he jogged out the library and to the front doors which were thrown open. He stopped suddenly, causing Clary to ram into him from behind. She stepped back and and around him to see what he was staring at, instantly she knew they were in trouble. The front yard of the Institute was flooded with demons.
