Hours had passed and I was still in the hospital with Karina. Turns out when the guy who shot Karina shot her in the chest and the bullet was about three inches away from her heart. The surgeons had to do an emergency surgery on her. They said she'd be sleep for at least four hours . . . it had been six. Three o'clock in the morning and yet again I was sitting in the hospital hallway hoping someone would be okay, the first being my sister.
I went to the gift shop and got Karina a teddy bear and a balloon that said 'get well soon'. It was pink with a baby bear on it. I pull out my phone and look at the time for the millionth time. I stand up and walk into Karinas room. She was awake and had the T.V. on. She looked at me when I entered the room.
She reaches for the remote and mutes the T.V.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
"Uh . . ." Was all I could say.
She was beautiful with her bed head and hospital gown on. Karina raised her eyebrows and said:
"I asked you a question."
I smile at her and walk to the seat next to the bed.
"I just wanted to make sure you were okay." I replied.
"Ugh, well I'm fine, now go!" Karina said.
I frown.
"Why are you so rude?" I asked.
Karina looks like she had just been attacked. Oh-no. Did I hurt her feelings? Oh, God I hope I didn't.
"I'm not rude." Karina mumbles, looking at the T.V.
". . . Answer my question." I say.
She looks at me.
"Why?"
"Because I answered yours." I replied. "It's only fair for you to answer mine."
"Yeah well life isn't fair." Karina said. "Why are you so nice to me?"
"What do you mean?" I asked, frowning.
"You're a asshole, right? Or do you prefer to be called a jock?" Karina asked.
"J-jock." I replied, timidly.
"Mm-hm. So now do you understand why I am how I am?" Karina asked. "I mean I saw you walking up those stairs with that girl and guy. You guys were probably about to have a threesome."
"We were drunk." I said.
"How?" Karina asked.
"What?"
"How were you drunk when you don't have a hangover right now?"
That's a really good point.
"Well technically, Rodgers was drunk and I-"
"Oh, so it was peer pressure?" Karina asked accusingly. "It sure didn't look like it. I saw that bulge in your pants."
I look down at my crotch.
"You need to control that."
"Well you see, us men don't really . . . have control over that."
I clear my throat, embarrassed. Karina scuffs and mumbles something that I couldn't quite catch. She looks at the little nightstand and sees the bear and balloon I got her.
"Oh, God, please tell me you didn't get me that?" She said, pointing to the objects on the nightstand.
"So what if I did?" I asked.
Karina gives me a death glare.
"I don't even know you." Karina said.
"But that doesn't mean we can't get to know each other." I said.
"I'm not interested in getting to know an asshole." Karina said.
"Ooh, careful, you calling me an asshole is turning me on." I said.
Karina looks at me disgusted.
"Nasty." She mumbled.
I bite my lower lip and she notices.
"Stop."
"What?"
"Stop!"
"I'm not doing anything!" I said. "Am I giving you butterflies?"
It took a moment before Karina answered me.
". . . N-no." She replied.
I wink at her and her cheeks turn a tomato red. I laugh.
"Stop!" Karina yelled, throwing a pillow at me.
I dodge it, laughing. Soon she started laughing and let's just say her smile is gorgeous. I think I love this girl.
"Let me love you." I mumble.
Karina frowns and looks at me.
"What?" She asked.
"I didn't stutter." I replied.
Karina moved a little, looking uncomfortable.
"I'm not interested in a boyfriend right now." Karina said.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Look at me!" Karina shouts. "If it weren't for my ex boyfriend shooting me in the chest I wouldn't be here!"
Oh so that's who I saw at the mall. Why was he looking at me like he was going to kill me though? And why did he enter the ladies room? Has he been spying on Karina and I?
"Is that why you were crying in the tub at the party?" I asked.
Karina sighs.
"How do I know I can trust you?" She asked.
"Because . . . I'm in love with you." I said.
Karina just looks at me like she didn't believe me.
"Uh-huh." She said sounding bland. "I believe you."
I shake my head.
"No you don't." I said.
I get up and lean over Karina and kiss her forehead.
"What can I do to make you trust me?" I whispered.
I sit back down and Karinas eyes follow me.
"Nothing really." Karina said.
"Well then trust me I'm not going to hurt you in any way, I promise." I said. "Please let me in."
Karina looks like she's about to cry.
"I'm not going to be good enough for you." She said, trying not to cry.
". . . You want to know what you are to me?" I asked.
"Give it your best shot." Karina replied.
"Perfect."
She just stares at me.
"What?" She asked.
"You're perfect to me."
Karina takes a deep breath and looks down at her hands that were folded in her lap. She then slowly raised her head up.
"Actually." She said. "There is one thing you can do to make me trust you."
My ears perked.
"And maybe take you out on a date?" I asked.
". . . Maybe."
SCORE!
"What can I do?" I asked.
"Help me find my ex boyfriend and put him in jail." Karina said. "And once you do that I will open up to you."
"All the way?" I asked.
Karina just laughs.
"Do we have a deal?" She asked, sticking her hand out for me to shake.
I smile and take her hand.
"Deal."
We shake hands and the deal was made.
