After playing multiple rounds of Candy Land I start to get sad because Karina has won every single game. My phone buzzes and I see the time. The entire school has been under lockdown for two hours and thirty four minutes. I was supposed to be in seventh period right now but I'm in a janitors closet playing Candy Land with Karina, not that I'm complaining because she is good company (and not just because I have a crush on her). I look at what made my phone buzz and see that I had gotten two texts from Mom and Rodgers. Both asking the same question but using different words.
Rodgers: Are you okay bro?
Mom: Are you safe???
"Your Mom?" Karina asked.
"And friend." I add. "How did you know?"
"Well personally if my Mom knew-"
Karinas phone chimed and she pulled it out of her back pocket and looked at it.
"I knew because of this." She said.
She showed me the text on her phone so I could read it.
Karinas Mom: Sweet child are you okay, please tell me you're okay!!!!
"Wow." I said.
"Yeah." Karina said, retracting her phone.
She stared at the screen for a moment and I just watch her breathe. She then starts typing on her phone. When she shuts her screen off she puts her phone back in her pocket and looks at me. My dumb self was still staring at her.
"Were you going to answer you Mom and and friend?" She asked.
"Oh right!" I say.
I look down at my phone and reply to Rodgers and Mom.
Me: Yes, I'm fine.
I got an immediate text from Mom.
Mom: Are you sure because there is a guy on campus with a gun killing others because he was bullied and he's just trying to gain respect!!!
Wow. That's . . . crazy.
"What?" Karina asked, worry in her voice.
"Nothing, it's just . . . my Mom told me what's going on." I replied.
"What's going on?" Karina asked.
"A guy is here trying to gain respect." I replied.
"That's why we're under lockdown?" She asked.
"Well the guy has a gun." I state.
Karina doesn't looked worried anymore which is confusing. What human wouldn't be worried about someone trying to kill them, not saying that she's his main target but she can become his target real quick!
"You're not worried?" I asked, the question coming out of no where.
"About what?" She asked.
"The guy killing everyone."
"He's not killing everyone." Karina said. "Besides it makes sense."
Okay I did not expect her to say that.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I mean if I wasn't afraid of going to jail I'm pretty sure I'd do the same." Karina said.
Does she really mean that? Is she a psychopath? If she is she's a beautiful one.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Karina looked at me, she was studying me (not checking me out).
"I don't know you that well to give you my whole backstory." She said.
"You can trust me." I said.
"How do I know that?"
Because you're about to be my future wife. That's what I wanted to say but I didn't.
"You don't." I reply. "Sometimes in life you just have to let your guard down and trust people."
Karina snorts.
"This is high school Alex, not a fairytale." Karina said. "Although I would love to live in one."
"Which one?" I asked. "And who would you be?"
Karina stares at me.
"I'm trying to get to know you!" I say.
"Why? So you can get up in my pants? I don't think so."
I sigh and lean my head against the wall.
"I'm sorry, I have trust issues, just a little bit." Karina apologizes.
I could tell. She's a guarded girl and I'm going to try to bring down her walls. For fun? Maybe. I know she's beautiful and all but that doesn't mean she's not like all the other girls, meaning that wouldn't mean she would just want me to have sex with her.
"At my old school I used to get bullied a lot so I hid behind walls and before I knew I became this." Karina said gesturing to herself.
Tears greeted her eyes butshe was fighting them back.
"I'm sorry."'I mumble.
I'd hug her but I don't want her to punch me or something. Guarded girls are very violent, I learned that the hard way.
"No one has been able to break the walls down so I just made myself at home behind them." Karina explained.
She looked at me. I think she was looking for answers.
"What?" I asked.
"Your turn." She said.
"Oh I don't think you'll like my backstory." I said.
"Why? . . . Because you're a jock and probably made out with every single girl here?"
I smile.
"Why ask if you already know?" I asked.
Karinas face went blank.
"I did not expect to be correct." She said.
I smile at her.
"I didn't want to be correct." She mumbled.
"Why?"
"Because that's bad!"
"Oh, so are you saying I'm a bad boy?" I asked raising my eyebrows.
Karina looks at me giving me what looks like warning eyes.
"What?" I asked.
"You're pathetic sometimes, you know that?"
I smile at her. We then hear gunshots. Karina jumps and crawls over to me.
"Aww, someone's afraid of gunshots." I tease.
She hits me.
"Ow!" I say playfully, rubbing the spot she hit.
"Shut up!" She hisses.
She scoots closer to me and now I can feel her body heat. She yawns. She's tired.
"You can lean on me and fall asleep." I suggest.
"I'm good."
"I can see why no one has made an attempt to bring down your walls." I state.
Karina doesn't say anything. Oh-no did I say something that upset her.
"Karina?"
"What for you want?"
"Are you okay?"
"It's none of your business."
Karina then scoots over to the other side of the janitors room. She curls up in a ball and glares at me with tired eyes.
"You won't kill me will you?" She asked.
I shake my head.
"No."
Karina lays her head on the floor and falls asleep.
