Cassie cried for longer than she could remember, her head whirring.
She just needed some air; she just needed a break from her family. The girl jumped as the hurricane siren started to go off.
"Where do you think you're going?"
"Walk." Cassie avoided her fathers eye.
"No fucking way, not after what you pulled."
"Please dad, I just wanna get some air before the hurricane hits."
"And I just want a useful fucking daughter who will marry a nice rich guy, but you can't even seem to keep a boyfriend with your attitude- or maybe it's the fact you go out looking like a fucking tramp."
That one hurt; every morning Cassie spent hours getting ready because she was always so anxious about how she looked.
"Please, I just need some air."
The girl had noticed herself heating up, and her chest tightening, she had to get out before a full fledged panic attack came on.
"I just need you to be less of a nuisance."
Cassie pushed past him, and headed for the door. Ian grasped her wrist tightly.
"I said no."
Tears were streaming down her cheeks, "I have a right to air, I need some air, I feel like I'm suffocating."
The man laughed in her face, "yeah not in this house, go suffocate somewhere where its not annoying me."
"I need air please-"
"If you don't like my rules you can pack your bags-"
Her mind went straight to JJ.
"Yeah I think I will."
She ran upstairs and shoved everything she owned into a large duffle bag.
She stormed out, almost instantly soaked in the rain.
"Yeah thanks for the 16 amazing years of fucking messing me up, you deserve a medal."
She didn't know where she was going; Cassie didn't actually have a car, and she didn't want to call her friends. She had asked JJ to come, but he didn't, so that meant he didn't want to and she wasn't going to force him or the others. Especially not in a storm.
The girl sat at the beach letting the rain fall down on her. She wanted to cry but she couldn't, so she just watched the waves contemplating what she had just done.
As soon as Cassie started thinking about her family, her tears began to fall, and as soon as she started, she couldn't stop.
"Those aren't surfable waves, bro."
"Fuck," the girl tried to look presentable, but the more she tried the harder she cried.
John B sprinted past her with a surfboard, and after a minute Pope followed.
She was sat against a dune, so they must have not noticed.
Cassie watched them for a while, then stood up when John B paused and stared.
There was a boat out there.
She was shaking really bad when Pope started yelling. The two boys swam to the shore and started running at her.
"Oh shit."
"What the hell are you doing here Cass?"
John B grabbed a jumper from his van and gave it to her.
"Um, I wanted to watch the waves."
"In a hurricane?" Pope frowned.
"Uh, yeah." She tried to look innocent, but it was hard.
"JJ was looking for you."
"Oh." The rain was coming down harder.
"Why were you crying, and why are you actually here?"
"I, um, I got kicked out- or I left. I don't know, it's complicated. Either way, I'm not welcome back."
"Oh shit."
"Do you mind if we sit in the van- I'm really cold."
The boys nodded and took her to the van.
"Why didn't you call us? You know you can stay at my place, right?"
"There's a hurricane."
"Even more of a reason."
Cassie sat in Pope's arms for warmth, while John B drove.
"You can move into the chateau if you want."
The girl thought for a moment, before replying.
"You wouldn't want me, I'm a nuisance."
Both boys laughed, until they realised she was serious.
"Who told you that? If it was JJ as a weird form of-"
"No, no it wasn't, it was my family. They, um, they don't like me very much."
"Well I do, and I want you to live at my place."
"Thank you."
"Right, Pope this is you."
The boy let go of Cassie and then jumped out of the Twinkie.
After a while of driving, they got to the chateau.
"Are you sure I can stay, because I can find somewhere else, it's no big deal-"
"I'm sure, you are one of my best friends, I want you to stay."
She smiled and followed him into the house.
"John B- you're back I couldn't find her anywhere. I'm really worried, Cassie is out in a hurricane on her own, and her parents said they kicked her out so she's probably really upset, I mean what if she's hurt- or a man tries to take advantage of her and she just says yes cause she needs somewhere to stay or, or- why are you laughing?"
John B just continued to laugh at JJ while he freaked out, completely oblivious to the girl sat on the couch.
"Maybe we should go look for her-"
"I'm not sure you'd be very good, I'm right here."
Without thinking JJ ran up to her, and hugged her.
"What happened?"
"I got kicked out, except I would more say I left so my parents really shouldn't be taking credit-"
"Are you okay? You're soaking."
Cassie laughed as JJ mumbled something about needing to take her temperature.
"Cassie decided she was gonna go to the beach while a hurricane was brewing."
"I'm sorry I didn't come in time-"
"That's what she said."
John B laughed.
"I was with my dad."
Cassie noticed JJ was standing weirdly.
"Why don't we have a beer- smoke a joint?"
"Good idea."JJ is a mother hen and you can't convince me otherwise.
