Chapter 4 - Newborn friendships and Carnivorous plants

It had been 1 month since Aria first discovered the fascinating world of Angels. The death of her parents deeply affected her. It was the first time she really knew what it was being alone. The small things of life suddenly became the biggest ones.

When, at times she decided she had to tough up, she would go out and take some air in the strange garden that they actually called "Human way". Apparently, it was named so because of a story about an human-eating flower which was frozen to ice as it swallowed one of the original five arc-angel's lover because of her very much envied beauty. It was rumoured that the lover was still inside the flower and that she would be freed when the flower would be unfrozen. Aria followed the stone-pathed garden till the end and saw that  the scary flower was actually there.

"I'm sorry about your parents." said a voice.

Aria jumped in surprise and turned to see Adam walking towards her. "I know it's been a month already but Evelynn has been a real pain to break through. She's always around you. I swear, even you-know-who would be pissed!"

"Lord Voldemort?" asked a smiling Aria.

"Even him! Haha, no, I was talking about Leon." said a laughing Adam. "If you need something, just tell me."

She smiled sympathetically at him but then replied with a strong voice,

"I know it will never be easy... But when I think of it, instead of letting the pain in, I should probably stop crying and start acting. My dad was a brave person, and I don't know if I'll ever be like him someday, but he surely would not have liked seeing me like this."

"Yea, especially since you're one of the Five." said Adam casually "Everyone counts on you."

"One of the Five?"

Adam stared at her as if she just grew a second head.

"You don't know anything about the Five?" he asked incredulously "Oh, I guess Miss.Evelynn of protective land hasn't told you anything yet. It's understandable." He paused.

"Haven't you asked yourself what the mark on your wrist meant?" he asked her.

"What mark? I don't see anything." she replied, looking at her wrist.

Adam walked hurriedly to Aria, took her wrist and pointed to Aria the place where he clearly was seeing the mark.

"Here it is!" he exclaimed.

"There is nothing there!" replied Aria with the same tone.

"That is just weird." he raised his eyebrows. "Okay, let me explain... The mark on your wrist is a circle inside a star inside a circle." he traced the lines of the mark. "The inside circle means regeneration. The star means the five arc-angels forming one powerful entity. And the outside circle means protection. The five arc-angels re-incarnate every time the last generation dies."

"And their aim is to love, fight and protect." finished Aria automatically. "Wait, how did I know that?"

"It's in your blood." Adam replied knowingly. "It is bound to your soul and affects everything that has made you into the person you are today."

Aria nodded but still had issues fully believing all of it. It was crazy. She didn't have any powers or particularities.

"And the other four?" she asked, curious about the answer.

"Well, that's the thing...you are not supposed to be here...that early." he replied. "Your powers usually appear when you'll be 18...oh and by the way, don't forget to invite me, I love birthday cakes."

Aria smiled, assimilating the information, when suddenly she felt a sudden back-ache. She gasped  and then screamed when she felt her whole back burning.

Adam pulled her down as he saw Arena Evans, one of the Linevils' minions.

"What the heck are you doing here Arena? Hell's the other way." said Adam, putting himself in front of a screaming Aria. He felt helpless as Arena was the only one who could stop the torture.

"Oh oh...and I thought girls nowadays were the fiercest defenders of woman emancipation." the  green-eyed minion said while looking at her nails. "That girl is the best example of a pathetic damsel in distress. Too bad you won't have me, sexy blond boy." She smiled as her long fingers travelled along the jaw line of an annoyed Adam.

Adam raised an eyebrow and closed his eyes, breathing heavily as he poured his energy into sending a beam of light towards Arena who dodged easily, circling Aria with dangerous curiosity.

"Leave her alone." said Adam with closed teeth. There is a minion circling one of the five at her most vulnerable state. How in god's name am I going to save the situation? he asked himself. If I make one step she'll burn Aria to death. If I remain here, she'll know about Aria and run to the Linevils. Gosh I wish I hadn't eaten this porridge earlier. Focus dude, focus!

Adam analysed the whole scene in front of him, and there were 3 things he noticed:

1. Arena was limping.

2. Aria was unconscious with her wrist clear in sight.

3. The stupid frozen flower was preventing him from having a full sight of Arena.

Of course, the flower! he thought. It was a risky move though. Oh, screw that, risks have to be taken if we want to make a change.

"Hey ugly duck, take that!" he yelled, acting as if he was going to throw a beam of light at Arena.

Arena, who was closely looking at Aria's slim figure with huge interest immediately looked up and limped towards Adam while she threw a fire beam at him, missing him and landing on the flower. The high intensity of the fire beam could be seen penetrating the flower's red petals, entering its center, causing it to drastically melt.

When the petals sensed Arena's presence in front of them, they caught her with their branches and swallowed her, using her warmth to melt more. Arena tried to use her burning power to destroy the plant from the inside, but it only helped the plant be stronger. Adam rushed to Aria's unconscious body and held her in his arms. He did not take a look back to the plant as he walked towards the castle.

 ----------

Adam was scared. Arena in the castle's surrounding? Never a good sign. It meant the Linevils were spying on them more than ever. Did they know the first arc-angel has appeared? He highly doubted so. And the thing with the flower. For centuries no angel or linevil had ever suceeded in reviving it. How could it have suddenly work? There must be a reason behind this.

"What happened to her?" cried a worried Evelynn, as Adam entered the Health and care wing of the castle. "What did you do again Fibbiani?" she gave him an accusing look.

Adam scoffed and rolled his eyes. He put down Aria on the nearest bed and sat on a chair, breathing heavily. Then he turned to Evelynn who was scrutinizing him.

"Oh...nothing much, just saved her life from an obsessed female-minion-know-it-all planning to take over the world." he replied defiantly, "where's Leon?"

"Lower your voice young man." scolded Evelynn, "If it's true, you should meet Leon right away. He's  in the library."

Adam took a last look at Aria then left the room, running to news of a life-changing nature.

At the same time, Evelynn tucked Aria in a bed and gasped when she saw the burns on the girl's back. Red marks everywhere and burns on her sides. But when Evelynn saw two distinct lines on the left and right side of Aria's back, she was astonished. "Oh dear god, already?" she said, pity dripping from every word. Aria's wings were growing.
