The knife whizzed through the air. Amelia heard the soft whistling as it went over her head.

Then the classroom door slammed shut. Just a fraction of a second later, the blade drilled into the notice board next to it with a muffled sound.

Grey was completely unaware of what had happened. Amelia let out the air she'd been holding all along.

Nicholas had timed his throw perfectly... didn't he?

He'd been known to pull some crazy stunts all the time.

But was he crazy enough to kill Mr. Grey in front of all of us?

Amelia only now noticed that she clasped the edge of the table to tightly that her knuckles appeared white. She literally had to force herself to loosen her grip.

"Try to control THIS!" Nicholas laughed loudly.

"What was that?" Jacob pointed out.

"A knife, you dumbass," Nicholas sneered and took long strides towards the door.

"You could have killed him, Nick!" cried Veronica.

"Right on, man." Tom agreed. "That was really sick!"

Amelia was surprised. She had actually expected Nicholas' friends to find the switchblade thing funny or cool.

"I'm stupid, you know that," Nicholas' said unmoved. "Bad grades, bad behaviour, bad manners. I'm probably just a bad guy."

He pulled the knife with a jerk from the notice board, folded it up and put it away. Then he went to the teacher's desk and settled down there.

"Nice chair," he noticed and swung back and forth a couple of times.

"I can't believe it," Jacob muttered to himself.

"What?" Nicholas asked innocently.

"You could have killed him."

"Are you still on that subject?" Nicholas moaned annoyed. Then he added in an exaggeratedly high-pitched voice, "That was a full five minutes ago."

Amelia threw a nervous look at the door. Grey could come back at any moment. If Nicholas stayed where he was sitting now and continued to behave provocatively, they would all get in trouble.

She sunk down in her chair. Why didn't she think of that stupid math homework? Then she wouldn't be in trouble now. This kind of thing just can't happen to a straight A student.

*I don't belong with these crazy people." She thought.

"Why are you here?" Nicholas asked at the same moment.

Amelia's head popped up. Nicholas looked at her forcefully. "Forgot my homework," she replied. Her casual tone startled her a bit. Why did she pretend it was the most normal thing in the world to hang around school on a Saturday?

"Forgot your homework," Nicholas repeated. "Hey, Tom. When was the last time we did homework, anyway?"

"The third grade cram book?"

"Yo!" Nicholas turned his attention back to Amelia. "So, you think you're tough, huh?" he asked.

"No, I'm not," Amelia replied.

"Oh, come on," he snorted. "Take my lighter and torch a book."

Before Amelia could reply, Veronica marched through the passageway towards Nicholas. She sat in front of him on the teacher's desk, blocking his view of Amelia. Amelia felt as if a heavy weight had been lifted from her.
