"No!" cried Amelia. "You are not alive! It is impossible!"
"Go away!" screamed Veronica.
Amelia stared at the skeletons. Each of their bony limbs trembled with tension as they floated fidgety before her.
How could she know they wouldn't tear her apart?
But there was no time left.
"Just walk through them!" shouted Nick.
"I can't." Veronica sobbed with fear.
"Just do it already," screamed Nick.
Amelia spun to him. The mist was inches from his face. They had to leave - immediately.
She took a deep breath and stormed towards the skeletons with a torch outstretched.
She managed to get past the first one, but then the others gathered around her. With their bony arms they reached out for her. Claws for her clothes, her hair, tried to grab her by the throat.
"No!" cried Amelia and struck at them with the torch.
It fell out of her hand and landed on the floor. The flame went out.
She wrapped one of the skeletons around their arms. The disgusting brown skull approached her face as if it wanted to kiss her. Their jaws opened and closed and the broken teeth moved just inches from her lips.
Amelia moaned in disgust and pushed the hideous thing away. It staggered backwards and landed roughly on the stone floor.
Immediately two arms wrapped around her neck from behind and a bony hand brushed across her face.
Amelia drove around and hit the skeleton. She smashed its chest with her arm. Instantly, a wave of nausea flooded her.
On her hands was a disgusting black goo - the remains of human flesh.
"Go away, leave me alone," she shouted in a shrill voice.
The rest of the bones fell to the ground, rattling. The skull rolled away and disappeared into the darkness. Amelia took a running jump and crawled up to the passage as fast as she could.
When she reached the top, she turned around.
Veronica was not behind her. She stood frozen at the foot of the pile of rubble while one of the skeletons reached out for her.
Nick had noticed it too and shot at Veronica. His speed amazed Amelia. He pretended to run in one direction and then sprinted in the opposite one. His technique was so good, you could see he was a pro football player. No wonder he was the team captain.
During the race he kept his eyes fixed on the skeleton.
Then he raised his torch like a baseball bat.
When he struck with it, the skeleton seemed to explode. A torrent of bone fragments and sparks flew through the chamber.
The next moment everything went black.
"Come on!" she heard Nick scream.
Amelia threw herself into the tunnel without looking back. She crawled through it as fast as she could, swallowing dirt over and over again.
Finally, she rolled down the mound on the other side and lay dazed. She was grateful for the breath of cool, moist air - no matter how bad she smelled. Darkness ruled around her. All the torches had gone out now.
*Where are Nick and Veronica?* she thought. *They just have to make it!*
But Amelia couldn't see anything, or anyone.
All she heard was Veronica's cry.
A long, desperate cry that froze the blood in her veins.
Followed by a deadly silence.
