Amelia brought together exhausted in Nick's arms. "I can't believe it's really over," she said.
"Come," he whispered and reached for the lamp. "Let's get out of here."
Lumberingly, they hobbled into the main tunnel.
"Left six times in a row," Amelia murmured softly.
After a long march, they had found all six junctions. Amelia leaned on Nick the whole time. She was grateful they didn't have to run. That the red mist did not pursue her in its thirst for revenge.
On the way back, they didn't say a word.
It wasn't difficult to find the shaft that Mr. Grey had told them about. A steel ladder led up into the darkness. Far above them, Amelia could see a few points of light.
"We did it," she whispered.
She smiled at Nick. He smiled back.
"And what shall we tell the people now?" he asked. Amelia thought about how Tom, Jacob and Veronica had died. And how Mr. Grey had sacrificed himself.
*No one will believe us,* she thought. *Not a single person.*
"I don't know," she replied.
"Neither do I. Let's get out of here first. Then we can still think about it. And we can look for your sister. What even happened to her?"
Amelia nodded. She grabbed the cold ladder rung and looked up at the faint light stone. Then she and Nick climbed out of the tunnel.
