Amelia had never seen so much earth at once. And more kept coming. She collided with Mr Grey as she tried to get herself down on all fours to safety.
Finally, the avalanche stopped.
Amelia blinked. She couldn't believe it. The tunnel to the skeleton chamber was completely blocked off.
"It's over," she cried. "The mist is trapped!"
With her mouth open, she stared at the massive wall of earth and debris that loomed before her. Just before that, she had been on the other side, fighting for her life.
*That's it,* she thought with relief. *The fog is trapped in there. Now we can finally get out of here!*
Nick, lying at Amelia's feet, moaned. She and Grey helped him up.
"Are you okay?" Grey asked.
Nick frowned at him. "Get your hands off me!" he started rumbling. Grey let go of his arm and took a step back.
"What happened to Veronica?" Amelia asked.
Nick swallowed. "She's disappeared."
"What do you mean, she's missing?" Grey asked. "Where is she? What's going on down here?"
"As if you didn't know," Nick drove at him.
Grey narrowed his eyes into tiny slits. "What should I know?"
"Nine people died down here," Nick replied. "And it's all your fault!"
Grey turned pale. He stared at him with his mouth open. "Nine people... what are you talking about?"
Amelia stood in front of Nick before he completely freaked out. "Tom, Veronica and Jacob are dead, Mr. Grey," she told him. "A red mist has risen from this chamber and killed them all."
"Not to mention the six skeletons behind the collapsed ceiling," Nick added.
Grey raised his hand. "Hold on," he said. "Tell me exactly what happened."
Amelia told him the whole story. How she had fallen through the hidden trapdoor. How Nick had told them about the legend of the missing teenagers. How they touched the brick wall and it literally exploded. How the red mist had come out and killed Tom. She told him everything - including the writing on the wall:
WILLIAM GREY KNOWS
Grey stared at her in shock. He looked away, as if his mind was somewhere else.
"Mr. Grey?" Amelia asked, worried.
"Hey!" Nick yelled at him, waving his hand in front of his face. "Did you hear anything she said?"
Grey turned his eyes towards Nick. "I heard every word," he replied.
"Well, what do you know?" urged Nick. "What does this message mean?"
"I have no idea," Grey replied in a frustrated voice.
"What do you mean, you have no idea?" cried Nick. "After all, it's right there on the wall!"
Amelia put one hand on his shoulder. "Calm down," she said, admonishing him.
Grey gave a deep sigh. He collapsed at the foot of the mound of rubble, hiding his face in both hands.
"I don't believe any of this," Nick growled with a sideways glance at Amelia. "Let's get out of here."
