The whole Bloodmixian village was talking about the three candidates.
They would pick their gladiators in 2 days, and the supporters tried to show off their skills in order to be chosen.

Wolfe was unimpressed with his supporters. They were not worthy of fighting alongside him in the battlefield.

Phoenix, on the other hand, was impressed. Her supporters were relatively powerful. Phoenix herself wasn't much of a fighter, so she had a harder time
Judging them.

Ratte was the one with the least supporters.
Though the ones he had were the strongest in the village; he had high chances of winning the fight.

Shae and Heeshe were not too impressed with either of them. They knew that if they didn't pick a side, any one of the candidates could choose them.
But they didn't think they would be chosen, as they are terrible at fighting.

Haeie was a big supporter of Ratte, but he knew there is no way he would pick a doctor over some of the greatest gladiators in the village.

The only thing the Bloodmixians agreed upon was seeing how it will go down.

Lots of them were cheering for Wolfe, who wanted to use Pandora in order to destroy the serpents. He also wanted to cast out the less useful Bloodmixians, so they would not waste the food supplies, which the village didn't have a lot of. Overpopulation was one of the biggest problems in their society, and Wolfe's solution would have surely worked, but some believed there should be a better way.
His animal was a wolf, and he was known as one of the greatest fighters in the village.

Those are the ones who supported Phoenix. She did not like Wolfe's ways.
She wanted to Invest in larger farms and try to get more food in order to feed the entire society equally. Though she did not want to use Pandora in order to wipe out the Serpents. Instead, she wanted to work out a deal with them, so that both sides could live in peace.
Her animal was a bird. She had long wings and feathers colored in hot, fiery colors. Her nickname was Phoenix.

Ratte was the wisest and oldest of the three. He believed he knew better then the other two, and he thought Pandora was too unpredictable and he did not wish to use it against the Serpents. Though he did agree with Wolfe on the subject of overpopulation. The Serpents have attacked them every time they saw them trying to expand their village, and he knew farms were no difference. Casting out a majority of the population was cruel, though he did not have a better option.
He was a rat. Short, but athletic. He had no fighting skills, though.

Eventually, the time has come for the candidates to pick the gladiators. The entire village has gathered to hear whether they have been chosen. Some hoped they were, and some did not. The twins were one of those. They did not wish to fight, and they didn't think they would be chosen.
Haeie hoped that Ratte would choose him, though he knew it was unlikely.

"Greetings, Bloodmixians!" Said Ratte. "Today, me and the fellow candidates shall choose their fighters."
"The chosen shall fight alongside the candidate who chose them" Phoenix continued.
"And the best team shall survive." Said Wolfe.

"It was indeed hard to choose which ones of you to take to battle. Though it has been decided." Ratte confessed.
"My chosen are:
Leone of the lion-people!
Betta of the Bat-people!
And finally, Wellfe of the wolves!"
Ratte announced.

The crowd spoke between them and stared at Ratte's chosen. Haeie was disappointed though not surprised.

"Silence!" Wolfe shouted.
"I shall announce my chosen, now."
He said.
"Kate of the Ocelot-people.
Himba of the Gorillas.
And Heeshe of the Ape-Men!"

The people greeted the first two loudly, though Heeshe's announcement was reacted to silently.

Shae turned over to see Heeshe's expression. He was shocked, and so was she.
Wolfe must win, or else Heeshe dies. Thought Shae. Why did he pick him? My brother is not a great fighter.
Heeshe thought the same. Wolfe was his least favorite candidate, though now his life depends on his win.

Phoenix now had to speak.
"Unlike the two other candidates, I chose my fighters not only because of their strength. But also because of their wisdom.
My chosen are:
Ocop of the Men-fish!
Quara of the birdmen!
And Shae of the Ape-men!"

Yet again, the crowd was silent. Shae and Heeshe looked at each other. This was much worse. Each on of them was on a different team..., which meant only one would make it out alive. They had to fight each other.

She must have chosen me for my actions at the Serpent's attack. Shae thought. And she doesn't know I caused it.

At the end of the announcement, Heeshe went to talk to Shae. He didn't know what he was going to say, but he wanted to talk to her about the fight.
Shae was in their cabin. She opened the door, and looked at Heeshe silently.

"There is no way to prevent it, Heeshe." She said.
Heeshe sat down and thought. "Can't we ask them to choose someone else?"
"They will not accept it." She said. "It is an honor to be chosen, they won't let us out."

"And what if we team and don't fight each other? Asked Heeshe.
"Then instead of killing each other, we will both be executed." Shae answered. "There's no way to prevent it."

"What if we make it so we won't have to meet? We would still be in the same risk of dying, though at least not by each other's hands." Heeshe suggested.

"What's the plan?" Shae asked. Heeshe's idea was not bad.
He took paper and a pen and drew a few tiny squares and circles around it. "The battlefield will be our village, which has many buildings in it, which are obstacles for the fight." He explained. "Since all these obstacles are around the village, the field of view is not clear and the other side of the village cant be seen, since it's blocked by buildings."

Heeshe drew a line across the middle of the drawing. "If we both stick to opposite sides of the village, it would not be likely that we see each other".

Shae looked at the map he drew. This could work. She thought.
"I stick to the left." She said. "I'll be near the edge."

"Alright then." Heeshe said. "You sure it's the only good way?"

"No." She said. "But it's the best one we have come up with."
