Word Count; 2815Sakusa's POV
Sakusa slumped into his chair. He adjusted the medical mask the attending nurse had given him, feeling oddly discomforted by what had been familiar all his life. The mask was no longer a precaution against the pathogens running rapid in the outside world: now, it symbolized sickness and carried a weight heavier than death.
Just then, (l/n) stirred beside him. Sakusa startled, his eyes widening as she let out a tiny groan. Had she sensed his presence? He didn't have time to mull it over because (l/n)'s eyes opened by a slim margin.
"Sakusa?" (l/n) whispered. "What happened? You were...." she tried to sit up, but couldn't. Sakusa rushed to her side, intending to help, but his hands wouldn't move.
Why? Why am I stopping? When he'd carried (l/n) to the police cars (which had been stationed in the parking lot in case of an infection) the possibility of her having the virus had crossed his mind. But still, he hadn't wavered. Sakusa had held her close to his chest, up until that last moment when he'd eased her into the police car.
His fingers stood still.
Meanwhile, (l/n) had laid back down with a sigh. "You carried me to police cars, and now I'm here. And... you're here."
Sakusa's fingers trembled as they came to rest on the railings enclosing the hospital bed. "I came to see you as soon as I could."
"Please tell me you guys won," (l/n) breathed. Her voice was shallow, almost pleading. She looked so feeble, like a mere shadow of herself.
He nodded. "Komori and I wanted to go with you to the hospital, but coach said you'd rather see us after we won first place."
(l/n) gave a weak smile. "He was right, you know." Taking a deep breath, she managed to sit up and prop herself up against the pillows. "Did you tell the team what happened?"
"No. We didn't want to sacrifice our entire team's focus. Komori and I had a hard time explaining why we were playing so badly." (l/n) laughed, encouraging Sakusa to go on. "We honestly should have lost, but a funny thing occurred."
"Tell me all about it!" she urged, positioning herself towards him. Sakusa smiled from behind his mask.
"After winning the first five points in a row, the captain of Fukurodani and I had a conversation from opposite sides of the net. I believe he said, 'Oi, are you okay?' and I said, 'Why do you care?'. He gave a crooked smile and said, 'Because I have a boyfriend who gets sad sometimes'."
"Bokuaka supremacy," (l/n) whispered in awe.
"Ah yes, I think his name was Bokuto," Sakusa confirmed, much to (l/n)'s delight. He continued on. "I was too tired to lie, so I told him our manager had been taken to the hospital. Bokuto choked, hooted like an owl, shouted 'AGAASHI!!' and collapsed onto the floor."
(l/n)'s jaw dropped. "No way. He went into-"
"Extreme emo mode, according to Fukurodani's setter," Sakusa finished.
"Oh shit. So that's how you won? Bokuto was off his game?"
"Yeah, he couldn't land any of his straights. The setter was also pretty shaken. All four of us played terribly, but in the end our team came out on top."
(l/n) buried her face in her hands. "Oh God. I bet the OYA OYA group chat is going crazy right now," Sakusa heard her mutter. "But I'm glad you won."
