The Orphanage

I woke up by 8 am on Tuesday. That’s too early. I wish I could go back to sleep but I have to go to the orphanage. It’s been a while and I miss Mother.

I need to call my P.A., Jessy, to get some things for the kids and tag along. I can go alone but I like having Jessy with me, on occasions as this.

“Hey Jessy, could you take the day off and accompany me to the orphanage I told you about last week."

“Of course, I’d love to come.”, she replied.

“Oh, that’s great Jessy, thanks. There are boxes in my office, could you bring them along on your way here? It’s a little something for the kids.”

“Sure.” She said then hung up.

Jessica is a very devoted employee; she’s been working with me for 3 years now. I’m really glad to have her as a P.A. I told her to meet me at target, so we’d pick up some flour, yeast and other things for baking.

I’m so happy that I’d get to have a place I can call home, all the Nuns and the kids in the orphanage. It reminds of my late best friend and brother. It’s been 7 years since he passed on, but it feels like a decade. I really miss him.

Well, I am not going there to mourn, so I’ll just put the past aside and move on. We got to the orphanage by noon. I got out of the car to get the gifts for the children. Jessy assisted me with that.

I didn’t wear anything flashy; I had a denim jacket on, a body con top and skinny blue jeans with my favorite Puma sneakers. The kids were so happy to see us, they ran towards me and hugged me, I lost my balance and almost fell.

Mother came to my rescue. I was about to tear up  but I controlled my emotions and smiled hugging her tightly. She took us to the hall for the event of today. I told her I wanted to make something special for the kids. So, I went to the kitchen with Jessy.

Mother said, “You are home my love and you are free to do whatever you want.” She pecked my forehead then walked out of the hall.

I had small chops in mind with BBQ chicken, fruit punch and some fruit salads for the kids. I started with the small chops and made spring rolls, chicken kebab, coconut candy, mini donuts, stick beef, samosas, roasted snails, mini sausage rolls and fish rolls. Hmmm, I had fun in the kitchen with my little chefs.

There is this girl that caught my attention. She just isolated herself from the others, she reminded me a lot of myself when I was younger. I am curious about her story. She looked like an 8-year-old in need of freedom. I walked up to her.

“Hey there little fella, you don’t seem good. What’s wrong? Why are you so sad?” I squatted to her level.

Wow, she did even spare me a glance. This is a one tough one.

She just whispered. “Nobody wanna be friends with me. They call me a cry baby all the time and it makes me sad”, I empathized with her.

“You aren’t a cry baby love. Will you be my special friend?” She nodded. “You see now you got a friend bigger than all the others. Don’t cry love, be strong like Wonder Woman.” I wiped her tears with my thumb.

She sniffed a little then stood. “I’m Wonder Woman!” She exclaimed.

I chuckled and hugged her.

The kids at the orphanage haven’t changed, still the same attitude as before. Mother has a lot to deal with, bullying, pranks and lots more. This girl really depicts the younger me, shy, timid, scared but all that changed when I met him. I hope she finds someone that’ll adopt her quickly and get her outta here.

“I’m so sorry miss, I didn’t tell you my name. I’m Flora, what’s your name?”

“I’m Leona”.

“Your name sounds so cool, mine is lame. Sometimes the kids call me Floor girl ‘cause my name sounds like floor.”

She emphasized “floor” with hatred and disgust.

“No love, your name is really sweet and it suites you ‘cause you’re a cute angel.” I squeezed her cheeks.

“You think so?”

“Flora, I know so. Let’s go have some fun. Wanna draw?”

She raised her eyebrows in question, “Draw what?”

I know it'd sound absurd to her but I’m sure she’d love it.

“I dunno maybe some clothes” her facial expression didn’t change at all.

“Clothes? How do ya draw them?”

Well, this is gonna be a long day.

“C’mon, I‘ll teach ya. Let’s go!”.

Surprisingly, Flora was a pretty fast learner. She learnt how to draw a flared skirt real quick. I complimented her on that.

“When next I come, I'll bring these clothes for you to wear. You won’t just see the clothes, but you’ll wear them, my wonder woman.”

I think I’ll sew a wonder woman costume for her. I’m sure she’ll like it. Jessy had a lot of fun too. She told me all about it on our way home.
