two weeks later...

i finished applying the dark mascara on my eyelashes and put my hair straightener back in its place.

"you ready?" mattia asks, hugging my waist from behind, "remember, i'll be right there next to you the whole time."

"yeah," i smile in the mirror, placing my hands on top of his, "i think i actually am. any news on kenzie?"

"she's going to court soon, but she has a really good chance. after all, it was self defense."

"good," i reply, "if she hadn't texted you.. i dont know what would've happened."

"hey," mattia says softly, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear, "let's not talk about it, okay? you don't have to keep reliving it."

"i know, i'm sorry," i sigh, "let's just go."

-

we pulled into the church parking lot, there were already a lot of cars there. the weather was foggy and cold but weirdly enough, it was kind of comforting in a way. autumn had always been my favorite season, and i was glad to see it come early this year. it's just something about the falling leaves and the warm sweaters; i loved everything about it.

"y/n!" mattia says again, "earth to y/n!"

"oh!" i say looking up, "sorry, i wasn't paying attention, what happened?"

"we're here," maya voices softly, "is everything okay?"

"yeah, everything's good," i reply, "can mattia and i walk in ahead of you guys so we can see our friends?"

mattia shoots me a side glance, "our friends?"

"duh," i say, hopping out of the car, "we have to sit with them."

"are you sure you wan-

"yes!" i interrupt, "stop treating me like a little baby."

"but you are a little baby," mattia jokes, nudging me in the shoulder.

"shut up," i answer sarcastically, "oh, oh, there they are!"

i ran up and pulled kairi into a big hug while mattia greeted the rest of them. it had been a while since i'd last seen all the boys together. it was almost.. refreshing.

"how you holding up?" alejandro asks, hugging me as well.

"it's been a lot," i answer quietly, "what about you?"

"same," he replies, "i never expected to be standing here, i dont think ive processed everything that happened these past few weeks."

in a way, alejandro and i were going through the same thing. we both lost someone we had once loved and trusted, but was not at all who we thought. it felt horrible to have someone you felt so passionate about, go behind your back and stab you. when it first happened, it made me feel like everything was a lie, as im sure it did to him too.

we all walked in as a group, sitting down in one of the middle pews. there were some confused faces looking my way, but nothing i couldnt handle.

"we gather here today," the priest begins, "in loving memory of Natalie Harris."

the funeral was uncomfortable at times with all the weird looks and glances shot at me, but mattia held my hand throughout the entire process, just as he promised. although it wasn't that long, i was relieved for it to finally be coming to an end. honestly, it gave me a sense of closure, and for a moment, it felt as if everything would go back to normal. i actually felt happy for the first time in a while, and the reason was simple.

"mattia," i whisper as walked out of the church doors, "i think i love you."

"what?" he asks, his face filled with shock, "i think i love you too!"

i laugh at his loud voice, looking back to see the boys' surpised faces.

"okayy matti boy," alvaro says, attempting to wrap his arm around mattia's neck, "i see you!"

"you know what," mattia declares happily, "i'm gonna marry this girl one day."

i smiled to myself that night, because i knew he would never break that promise.

and i was right, he didn't.
