Chapter Twelve

The next morning, when I go to the kitchen for breakfast, my dad is sitting at the table with my mom, and my little brother, Adrian. 

I stop in my tracks, "What's going on?" 

"Good morning," Mom says. "Your dad wants to ask you and your siblings a question." 

I notice there are pancakes already on the table. This is probably going to be bad news. "Okay," I say and slowly sit down at the table, next to my mom. I serve myself some pancakes. A few minutes later, Pilar comes out. 

"What the hell?" She asks when she sees Dad. 

"Language," Mom scolds. "And sit down. Now that you're all here, you father has a question." 

Pilar slouches down on a chair next to me.

"So," my dad starts. "Your mother and I are getting separated for a while, and I'm not going to live here for the moment. I'm still going to live in this building, just on the first floor. Even though I'm not living with you guys, I still want to see you all, because I love you." 

Pilar scoffs. 

Dad continues, "So, my question is, do you guys want to spend the day with me on Saturday?" 

"Absolutely not," Pilar says. 

"Pilar, please give me a chance," Dad says. 

"Not after the way you treated Victor!" She exclaims. 

Dad sighs, "I know I overreacted. I apologized and I'm trying to do better." 

I turn to Pilar, "Dad came to talk to me after one of my work shifts. He apologized and I promised to talk with him again. We're not on good terms, but it's better than it was a few weeks ago." 

"I'll only go if you go," Pilar says. 

I smile, "I love you." 

Pilar makes a face. 

I turn around to face my dad, "Yeah, I'm in." 

"I guess me too," Pilar adds. 

"I'm kinda confused, but I'm in," Adrian says. 

"Okay," Dad says. "So, I'll see you guys on Saturday." 

"Yup," I reply. 

He stands up, "I'll see you guys then." He walks out of our apartment.

"Are you guys getting divorced," Adrian asks. 

"No, mijo," Mom says. "We're just taking a break." 

"Okay," Adrian says. 

There's rapid knocking on the door. 

I smile, "That's by cue. Bye, see you later." 

....

During school, Benji comes up to me at my locker. "Hey handsome," He says. 

I smile, "You call me that a lot,"

"Do you want me to stop?" 

"No." 

Benji smiles, "So, I was wondering-" 

"Benji!" Felix yells and comes up to us. 

"Hey, Felix," Benji says. "What's up?" 

"I need your help," Felix says. "Victor already know what this is about." 

I realize he's talking about his crush on Andrew.
