Tsukishima Kei x Reader
G U I D E | Prologue❇
Winter | December 23, 2021
Clad in a warm, thick coat, a certain blonde walked through the falling snow. Half of his face was buried in his scarf, his breaths forming white mist in the cold air as he continued walking, the crunch of snow under his boots too loud in the empty street.
"Ha... " he breathed out a sigh and held the bouquet of flowers in his hand tightly. They're the only colorful speck in this dreary world, out of place among the deathly stillness of winter's harsh embrace. Just as he adjusted the scarf on his face, his phone vibrated from inside his coat, making him pause his tracks to go through his pocket and check the caller...
"Yamaguchi?" he called out as he held the phone to his ear, watching his exhales melt into nothingness.
"Tsukki!" Yamaguchi greeted a scuffle in the background muffling his voice. "Actually-"
"Hey! Yamaguchi is that Tsukishima?!"
Tsukishima recognized the gruff voice coming through the phone, and he held the phone away from his ear when loud noises were transmitted into the call. Someone seemed to be fumbling with the phone, trying to take it away from Yamaguchi.
"Wait!" His best friend shouted from over the phone, still sounding muffled. It looks like Yamaguchi won the scuffle after all, and soon enough his voice sounded closer now, clearer. "Ah, sorry Tsukki! I'm over at Tanaka's house with the others! They wanted to invite you, but you changed numbers, so I had to call you."
"Is that so?" Tsukishima sighed and held the phone to his ear again. So it was like that. "No thanks. Tell them I'm busy, bye."
Then Yamaguchi sounded shocked, and the sounds of fumbling ensued. "WAIT, Tanaka-!"
Tsukishima heard more noises from the other line and removed the phone from his ear again, as if bracing for impact. Then the gruff voice returned, louder and more grating. "Oi Tsukishima Kei! You have to come here! You never showed your face again after the tournament!"
"Yeah, and?" Tsukishima said nonchalantly, turning cold from more than just the weather. "Is that all? If there's nothing else, I need to visit my wife. Bye." His thumb hovered over the end button, but before he could finish the call, he heard another voice, softer, gentler.
"Wait, let me..." He closed his eyes and brought his phone back to his ear. Shimizu took over the call without any fanfare this time, and he listened. "Tsukishima, we're planning a party at our house tomorrow. We invited everyone, even Hinata and Kageyama. Asahi and Nishinoya are coming over as well, are you sure you don't want to go?"
Tsukishima pursed his lips, and Kiyoko waited for him to respond. Should he go? The vehicles passing by him ticked the time for him, his silence louder than everything around him.
He could hear the others in the background calling out his name, but Kiyoko didn't make a move to shush them, still waiting for him. Sugawara and Tanaka were really insistent on him coming, huh.
In the end, he sighed and said,
"Fine." He's giving up, but he's not going quietly. "But I'm going to bring Akari with me," Tsukishima added. "I hope it's okay."(1)
"Yes!" Relief flooded her voice at his agreement, happy and excited. The noises in the background lessened, and Tsukishima knew they're finally satisfied with his answer. "Yes, of course! We're planning an all-day party, and we start at eight AM sharp. Bring a gift and make sure both of you come, okay?"
He sighed, rubbing his forehead with two of his fingers, the bouquet crinkling in his grip and bumping his head. "Sure. Give my greetings to the peasants and the king. Bye."
The people from the call shouted their goodbyes as well, and Kiyoko ended the call for him. He stared at the offending object before sticking it back into his coat pocket. Now he had to get gifts too.
He lowered the hand holding the flowers and resumed walking, looking around the place until he saw a shop selling cute stuffed toys. Pausing in front of the window, he smiled and thought, 'Akari will like these.'
Before he could go further, Tsukishima's phone vibrated again. He grumbled under his breath, taking his phone from his coat pocket to check the message while browsing the shelves. One hand held both his phone and the bouquet, while the other checked the toys' tags and quality.
As he grabbed a cute [insert what kind of stuffed toy] rather absentmindedly, his eyes quickly scanned the screen, reading the message that caused his good mood to decline quite steadily.
