Darkness creeped around as a chilling laugh erupted from the floor below. Yells could be heard from a man, causing a woman to whimper and clutch two babies tighter. She whispered in their ears soothing things, trying to stop their cries as well. Footsteps pounded on the stairs like a headache that just won't go away. The woman hurriedly placed the two children in a crib, telling them that she loves them. The door swung open and there stood a man, his face covered by a dark cloak and he held up a pointed stick with a long slender arm. The woman pleaded with the unknown creature, who yelled some words and flicked his object. A blazing neon green light filled the room and the woman flew back, her body suddenly limp and lifeless.
The man turned to the crying infants, or the crying infant. Only one of the two were crying. It was the boy, with his bright green eyes and dark hair. Tears streamed down his chubby face as he stared at his mother. The man glanced at the girl, who attempted to stand up. She grabbed hold of the off white crib fence, pulling her to her small feet. She shifted so her small figure got a clear shot of the man. She tilted her head, observing him. Her orbs were even brighter than the boys, and her hair a mixture of brunette and raven. She actually smiled at the awful guy. She bounced herself up and down and began giggling.
The man snapped out of his trance and narrowed his eyes. "Avada Kedavra!" He screamed in a pained voice, and another bright light filled the room. The girl shot back onto the mattress of the crib, motionless. Lifeless. Changes had now appeared on the infants- on the boy, a scar that looked like a lightning bolt on his forehead. On the girl, a strand of her hair had turned snow white. For the man, he was shot back into the black shadows of the night, never to be heard or seen of for the next ten years.
I woke up, breathing rapidly. I put a hand over my heart, feeling it's fast beats. I looked over at my brother, who was also awake. We shared a silent conversation, something we did many times. A loud tap on the cupboard door sent my heart racing again. "Up! Get up! Now!" My aunts dreadful voice filled my ears. I groaned and saw Harry grin at me, putting on his glasses. I ruffled his messy hair as I flinched, again. "Wake up, cousins! We're going to the zoo!" I looked up and got a face full of dirt and dust from Dudley jumping on the stairs. I sighed in defeat, opening the tiny door and stepping out, only to be pushed back in again and almost crushing my hands as my fat cousin kicked the door back as well. I mean, if you want to call it a door.
Still in our pajamas, we exited our tiny 'room' and into the kitchen to make breakfast. I glanced around and saw a pile of presents by the table. Oh, how could I have forgotten it was Dudley's birthday? I mentally face palmed and went to make Uncle Vernon's coffee. "Try not to burn anything." My aunt growled at Harry and covered Dudley's eyes, talking in a baby voice. "Yes, Aunt Petunia." Harry said in a fake mannered voice. "Hurry up! Bring my coffee, girl!" My uncle commanded, to which I just nodded and gave him his white mug.
"How many are there?" Dudley's voice cut in my thoughts. He was always rude and obnoxious, being 'Mummy's precious boy' and 'Daddy's fearless man', he never got in trouble. He was spoiled, just like all of his friends. I won't say his friends are worse than him, no. But his best friend, Piers Polkiss. He looks like a rat and smells like one too. He's liked me ever since him and Dudley became friends, which was in kindergarten. He always pulls me around wherever we go, and I'm forced to sit back and watch as Dudley and his gang chase Harry around.
"36, counted them myself." Uncle Vernon said proudly. "36?! But last year I had 37!" Dudley screamed, causing me to jump once more. I saw Harry roll his eyes and I put my head down and left the room, going to 'change' and laugh. I heard Dudley yelling still and Aunt Petunia trying to calm him down. I quickly slipped out of my lilac pajama dress and into one of the only outfits I own, which were also Aunt Petunia's hand-me-downs.
