We have three lamps in our living room. One is over by the window and hardly ever gets used (poor lamp), one is off in the corner by the phone and is connected to our third and final lamp, which is right there when you walk in. This lamp has the annoying habit of being dimmer than the one it's connected to, but unless you're sitting so you can see both at the same time, you don't really notice it. Until your mom comes over, puts her hand near it, and suddenly BRIGHTNESS!
I can't figure it out. None of us can. We've tried changed the bulb, but that only worked for a few days. And I'm pretty sure it only happens when my mom comes over and does it. I've never seen it do that for anyone else.
My family laughs at me because after she does that, I'll sit and stare at the light, occasionally mentally screaming at it while shaking my hands in the "HOWWWWW?!?!?!" gesture. For twenty minutes at a time. I'd go longer if I thought I could do so without them telling me to just get over it. I can't. I was literally up half the night a while back thinking about it. I just don't understand it and I simultaneously hate it and love it.
The only explanations I've got for this are that A) mom's been hiding the fact she can control light from us, B) the lamp is sentient and wants to mess with us, C) ghosts are messing with us. I guess really only me because I'm the only one who's really bothered by it.
Feel free to add your own theories! :D
