The brunette breathed in deeply, the cold air sharp in her lungs. The sun rose at the horizon, painting the sky in shades of pink and red, illuminating the still sleeping world around her. Trees were colored orange as their leaves danced with the gentle breeze. The leaves fell down, floating though the air in swirls and landing softly by her feet as she walked. Shops and restaurants around her had not opened yet and for a second she questioned whether the cafe would be open, as she had failed to check the times earlier. But as she moved closer to the spot where it stood, she saw the warm light seeping out of the building through the frosty glass windows. There was no one in there, but a small wooden sign by the door indicated that it was indeed open.

Leda walked in, taking comfort in the warmth radiating from a fireplace and breathing in the scents of freshly brewed coffee and buttery pastries. She ordered her usual and sat at the same spot she had the first time she had come there. There was something magical about the cafe during dawn. There were no other customers and the distant music playing from an old record player set her mind at ease. She stared out of the window and took pleasure in the view of the ocean in the near distance.

The water sparkled with the light from the morning sun as waves rippled. The gentle blue color reflected the red of the sunrise, tinting the color to a pinkish red on itself.

She shifted her eyes to the carved spot on the wall underneath the window. Her mouth lifted up in a smile at the addition. Someone had carved another X above the first one. She took out her metal key and slowly carved out an O underneath the vertical row of two Xs.

The world woke up.
