Veronica's POV
When I woke up later the next day, I noticed JD was not there waiting for me. I let myself breathe a sigh of relief that I didn't have to deal with his many rules for me.
I wasn't tied up so I got up and walked around the room. It was cold in here, being that it was all cement. It wasn't even spring yet, it was the many blankets JD put on me that kept me warm.
I walked over to the table and noticed a note in JD's handwriting.
Went to get some stuff in town. I'll be back soon. - JD
I read it once and then twice. I wondered how long ago he left, so I turned on the TV to get an idea. I tried to change the channel but the knob was glued in place and I couldn't find the remote anywhere.
I flipped it off, realizing it wouldn't give me any clues on the current time. I gently tiptoed over to the doorknob where JD came in from two days ago to see that he had reversed the doorknobs so that they locked from the outside. Unless I had a key, I couldn't get out.
Even if I did, he'd be home and catch me immediately with my luck. Or lack thereof.
Without many other options, I walked over to the bookcase and picked out Catcher in the Rye. JD knew it was one of my favorites. He had stocked up books I love as well as the ones he loves.
I retreated to the bed and started to read, hoping to find some comfort in the words I've read many times before. I only got two chapters in before JD came in with shopping bags.
"Good morning, sunshine." He greeted me happily. Clearly, he was in a good mood today and I couldn't quite figure out why.
"What's got you so cheery?" I asked him. He shrugged his shoulders in that way he often did and went along to put the food away. The refrigerator items went in there while the rest went onto another shelf in the bookcase.
"I got you some new clothes." He told me, handing me a bag. I looked in there to see a few t-shirts, some sweaters and some pairs of sweatpants. "Comfy ones." He added when I gave him a confused look.
"Why comfy ones?" I asked him.
"It's not like you exactly need to dress up anymore and I know you like to be comfortable at home." He explained to me.
"Where did you get these?" I asked.
"A little thrift shop about twenty miles away. Don't worry, I washed them already." He answered.
"How?" I asked.
"There's a washer and dryer upstairs." He replied. "I tried to move them down here but alas, they only work up there." He added.
"What else is up there?" I questioned.
"Nothing that concerns you." He told me, planting a kiss on my forehead. "Now, what do you say for the clothes?" He asked.
"Thank you," I said as he wanted me to. "Is there any way to get heating down here?" I asked. JD nodded, quickly going upstairs and emerging with a box.
"Ta-da!" He said, as if a kerosene heater was anything special.
"Those things reek." I mumbled. JD gave me a cross look.
"Remember to be thankful for what you get." He reminded me. "It's just until I can make the trip further out to get a better heater." He added.
"What trip?" I asked.
"Well, considering I had to drive twenty miles to get thrift store clothes, it's a long drive. I can't make the trip until I can trust you better." He explained, I nodded. "Now, don't you want to get out of those tattered clothes?" He asked me, not referring to the fact that he was the one who ruined my outfit.
