VOLUME I: THE RESONATING CALL

Caelum's POV

"I'm just saying, if we're a 'matching set' like a pair of boots, you're definitely the left one," I said, swinging my arms as we hiked through the steep, winding mountain passes. "Because you're completely left in the dark."

Silence. Complete, heavy, world-ending silence.

I glanced over at Riven. He didn't even blink. He just kept marching, his wild jet-black hair shifting slightly in the freezing mountain wind. Both of his eyes were a fierce, unnatural crimson red, staring ahead with an intense, steady heat. But it was the left side of his face that looked truly dangerous—only there did the dark purple veins crackle across his cheek like shattering glass, webbing out from beneath the messy dark strands of his hair. The dark, swirling void aura that constantly rolled off his shoulders like thick smoke seemed to bunch up tightly, shrinking back as if he were actively forcing it away from me. He was practically walking on the absolute edge of the cliffside just to keep a ten-foot buffer between us. He was terrified his passive shadows would swallow my light, but honestly, I just wanted him to laugh at one of my jokes. Just one.

Behind us, Lyra and Troy were treating this hike like a tactical military operation, their heavy, mechanized armor clanking rhythmically against the stone.

"Keep your eyes on the ridgeline, Caelum," Lyra called out, her voice sharp and completely serious. "This isn't a leisure stroll. The Ice Queen Elara's scouts are already scouring these surrounding sectors. The moment you two resonated in the chasm, your anomalous mana signatures lit up the continental sensory grid like a flare. If Elara's frost-vanguard spots that golden light or Riven's void fire, we'll be surrounded before we hit the lowlands."

"Which is exactly why we need to move immediately to the Hidden Valley," Troy rumbled, adjusting the massive alloy blade strapped to his back without breaking his stride. "The ancient Keeper is the only one who can mask your signatures and teach you how to lock down those volatile auras. Until then, you are walking targets."

"Ice Queen, frost-vanguards, ancient Keepers... honestly, it sounds like an aggressive winter festival," I chirped, flashing them a grin over my shoulder. I readjusted my heavy pack, trying to treat this whole world-saving escape like an unexpected, slightly intense camping trip. "Look at the bright side! The weather is crisp, the scenery is cinematic, and I brought dried fruit. Riven, do you want a dried apricot? It's basically a little piece of concentrated sunshine."

Riven finally stopped. He didn't look at the fruit. Instead, both of his crimson red eyes drifted past me, focusing entirely on Lyra and Troy.

"Your gear," Riven muttered, his voice gravelly and raspy from his years of isolation. It was the first time he had spoken in three hours, and I practically wanted to throw a celebration. "The Aegis-7 gauntlets. They don't draw from a mana core. How do they suppress an elemental matrix without triggering a magic feedback loop?"

Lyra blinked, clearly surprised by his hyper-vigilance. "Pneumatic pressure and a localized kinetic dampening field. We isolate the raw mana inside a vacuum chamber made of heavy silver alloy, then collapse the frequency mechanically. No magic required."

Riven nodded once, a calculating, deeply analytical look crossing his sharp features. I watched him study the steam-venting valves on Troy's pauldrons and the complex gear-assemblies on Lyra's boots. He was breaking down their specialized combat gear piece by piece, assessing their strengths, mapping out defense strategies, and looking for variables. He wasn't just walking; he was preparing for a war.
