VOLUME I: THE RESONATING CALL
Riven's POV
The jagged borders of Calastro felt like a trap designed specifically to kill me. Every limestone spire was a spear aimed at the sky, and every narrow ridge was a chance to fall into the abyss. I kept my breathing shallow, my twin crimson eyes scanning the horizon for the telltale shimmer of frost-magic. My left eye throbbed with a cold, rhythmic heat, the dark purple veins crackling against my cheek as my shadow aura fought to expand against the oppressive mountain air.
I stayed twenty paces ahead of the others, a distance I had maintained since we left the Whispering Chasm. My boots made no sound against the rock. Behind me, I could hear the constant, infuriating clank-hiss of Lyra and Troy's mechanical armor and the incessant, cheerful whistling of Caelum. The sound of his happiness was like a needle to my nerves. It was dangerous. It was loud. It was everything I had been taught to despise in the silent darkness of my exile.
"He's been following us for three miles," I muttered, my voice raspy and low, cutting through the thin mountain air.
Lyra's Aegis gauntlets hissed with a release of steam as she looked up, her hand hovering over the controls of her sensory array. "Who? I don't see anything on the mana-scanners. The sensors are coming up clean, Riven."
"Higher," I said, pointing toward a swirl of white clouds near a jagged peak. "He isn't using a standard mana signature. He's masking it with wind-drift."
A brilliant blue falcon was circling us, its wings cutting through the thin air with a precision that wasn't natural. It wasn't a bird of prey; it was a localized concentration of high-frequency blue mana. As we rounded a sharp bend in the trail, the bird dived. It didn't strike; it shifted. Mid-air, the feathers dissolved into ribbons of blue light, expanding and twisting until a lithe, slender man landed gracefully on a flat boulder ten feet in front of me.
"Whoa, easy with the red-eye stare! I'm a friend! Mostly!" the man shouted, raising his hands in a frantic gesture. He was dressed in light, wind-resistant leathers, his hair a messy shock of sand-colored brown. He spoke at a speed that made my head ache, his words tripping over each other like falling stones. "Verner, at your service. Scout, messenger, and occasional bird-about-town. The Keeper sent me. He said I'd find a walking lighthouse and a grumpy cloud of doom. He was spot on. Seriously, I could see the gloom from three peaks over."
I didn't lower my guard. Black fire sparked at my fingertips, the void energy hungry to lash out and consume the vibrant blue of his presence. "State your business, mage. And do it quickly before I decide your feathers looked better on the ground."
Verner's playful expression vanished instantly, his face hardening into something much more professional. "Business is bad, Doom-Cloud. Very bad. Elara's Vanguard hasn't just sent scouts; they've established a massive magical blockade along the primary mountain pass. It's a total lockout. They've got frost-spires every hundred yards, linked by a sensory web that'll snap shut the moment a single foreign mana signature touches it. If you keep walking this path, you're walking into a cage of ice."
"A blockade?" Lyra stepped forward, her brow furrowed as she looked at Troy. "We can't go around. The other passes are dead ends, and our fuel reserves won't last a detour through the Tundra Flats."
I looked at the terrain, my mind instantly mapping the shadows of the nearby cliffs. The sun was beginning to set, and the darkness was my only ally. "We don't go around. We go through. If I cloak us in a localized shadow-shroud, I can dampen the mana signatures. I can weave a veil of void energy that the sensory web will read as a natural dead zone. We move at night, low and slow. Infiltration is our only option. I can hide the light, but only if you stay close and keep silent."
