VOLUME I: THE RESONATING CALL

Riven's POV

The mountain path finally ended. We stood at the edge of a giant black cliff, looking at a place that did not seem to belong to our world. It was the Threshold of Antiquity. It was a massive, forgotten temple carved directly into the rugged side of a dead volcano. The stone of the mountain was dark gray and black, covered in centuries of ash and ancient dust.

Here, the air was completely still. There was no mountain wind. There was no sound of birds. Even the heavy, freezing breeze that usually followed my shadow aura seemed to die the moment we stepped onto the volcanic rock. The silence here was thick and heavy, like a blanket covering an old grave.

Both of my crimson eyes scanned the giant structure. The entrance of the temple was a massive archway, held up by giant stone pillars that looked like they were carved by giants. On the left side of my face, the dark purple veins gave a small, quiet pulse. They didn't crackle with anger anymore, but they felt warm, reacting to the heavy, old magic that lived inside the volcanic walls.

Behind me, Caelum let out a long, loud whistle. His messy golden curls bounced as he tilted his head back to see the top of the temple. His natural golden aura was bright, casting a warm yellow light against the dead, dark stone of the volcano.

"Wow," Caelum said, his clear blue eyes wide with excitement. "Now this is what I call a secret base. It is big, it is dark, and it looks like it has a lot of history. Do you think they have good food inside, Riven?"

"Be quiet, Caelum," I muttered, my voice raspy and low. "This is not a place for jokes. Look at the magic in the air. It is older than anything we have ever seen."

Lyra stepped up next to me, her heavy mechanical armor making a loud clank as she stopped walking. She had her Aegis-7 gauntlets back on her arms, and the small screens on her wrists were blinking rapidly with yellow and green numbers.

"He is right," Lyra said, her voice serious as she watched the data on her screen. "The mana signatures here are completely off the charts. It is not like the sharp, cold magic of Queen Elara's soldiers. This is raw, ancient energy. The volcano might be dead, but the power inside it is very much alive."

Troy stood behind us, his massive five-foot alloy blade resting safely on his broad shoulder. His gray eyes never stopped moving, watching the high ridges of the volcano for any sign of the ice scouts. "The trackers cannot find us here. The volcanic ash blocks their sensory nets. We are safe for now, but we must find the entrance."

"There is no path down," I pointed out.

The cliff we stood on dropped straight down into a deep, dark canyon. The main doors of the temple were across the gap, built into the opposite wall of the volcano. There was a wide, empty space between us and the sanctuary, with a drop of three hundred feet into absolute darkness.

"Do not worry, young travelers," a deep, booming voice called out from the darkness of the canyon.

The voice was so loud and heavy that it made the stones beneath my boots vibrate. Suddenly, a towering man stepped out from the shadows of the giant temple archway. He was massive, nearly a head taller than Troy, with broad shoulders and long, stone-gray robes that dragged along the dusty ground. He was a mage named Orion.

As he walked closer to the edge of the opposite cliff, his presence hit us like a physical wave. He did not smell like the cold ice of Elara or the dark void of my own magic. His presence smelled of fresh earth after a heavy rain and sharp, metallic ozone, like the air right before a massive lightning storm. His eyes were a deep, solid brown, looking like spheres of polished rock.
