VOLUME I: THE RESONATING CALL

Riven's POV

The bottom of the Whispering Chasm was completely suffocating. The air inside this deep, rocky valley was far too thick and heavy, vibrating with a raw, ancient magic energy that made the small hairs on my arms stand up instantly. I walked slowly through the swirling dark fog, the heavy soles of my leather boots clicking loudly against the jagged black stones beneath me. With every single step I took, my left arm continuously pulsed with a cold, heavy rhythm that grew more painful by the minute. The closer I got to the center of the clearing, the more my survival instincts screamed at me to turn around, run as fast as I could, and hide back inside the quiet safety of my dark forest cave. My body was telling me that stepping out into the open was a terrible mistake, but that heavy, iron voice inside my head refused to let me stop.

Suddenly, a massive, bright light exploded in the distance right ahead of me.

I stopped dead in my tracks, raising my right hand to shield my eyes from the sudden glare. It was blinding. A young man had just stepped out into the very center of the wide clearing, and his mere presence changed the entire environment around us in an instant.

Standing across from me was a boy who looked like a fragment of the sun itself dropped into the mortal world. He did not just carry a small lantern or a torch; a giant, glowing golden aura naturally spilled out from his body like an open fountain of fire. He had messy, bright golden curls that looked like spun starlight, framing a face with a striking, clear blue eye that shone like a bright summer morning. He wore a fine, light-colored collar with beautiful golden embroidery and patterns stitched into the fabric, a true symbol of the wealthy sanctuary that had raised him. The light flowed from him across the damp, gloomy rocks like warm liquid sunshine, completely chasing away the heavy gray darkness and the thick, creepy fog that had occupied this valley for centuries. The intense warmth of his magic hit my face from across the clearing, and it felt completely strange and uncomfortable against my cold, shadow-conditioned skin.

I took a deep, shaky breath, clenched my fists tightly, and forced my legs to move, stepping fully into the illumination. The very moment my boots touched the illuminated stones, my shadow magic reacted automatically to the threat of his brightness. The golden light dancing on the ground around my feet began to warp, flicker, and decay, turning into black ash and dead smoke wherever my shadow fell. The air instantly became freezing cold again, dropping the temperature in the center of the canyon by twenty degrees in a split second. A deep, swirling purple and black void energy flowed from my side of the clearing, crackling with a cosmic darkness and glowing celestial patterns. I felt the familiar, suffocating weight of my own isolation settling over the rocks, completely ready to swallow his beautiful light whole.

I immediately braced my body for a fight, planting my feet apart and putting my hands up defensively. Small, volatile sparks of wild black fire flickered angrily at my fingertips, ready to unleash a destructive blast if necessary. I knew exactly what was coming next; I was waiting for the inevitable look of absolute horror on his face. I was waiting for the loud, terrified screams, the immediate words of deep hatred, or the pure, infectious fear that I had received from every single living soul who had ever laid eyes on me. I fully expected him to pull out a sharp weapon, call me an evil monster, or run away from me in absolute disgust.

Instead, the golden-haired boy just blinked his bright, clear blue eye. He looked down at the wild black flames popping on my fingers, and then he looked directly up at my face. He did not take a single step backward. He did not reach for a sword. He did not look scared at all.

He let out a tense, breathy laugh, relaxed his shoulders, and casually waved his right hand at me as if we were just two normal neighbors meeting on a sunny dirt road.

"Well, you don't look like a global catastrophe," he said, a genuine, warm smile breaking across his face. "I'm Caelum. Nice to meet the voice inside my head."

My defensive posture faltered completely. My hands dropped slowly to my sides, and the angry black flames on my fingertips died out until they were nothing but faint wisps of harmless dark smoke. I stared at him, my mind spinning in complete circles, deeply unsettled by his total lack of fear. Nobody had ever looked at me with open, honest eyes and smiled like that. I did not know how to react, because for the first time in my entire life, the world in front of me was not running away from my darkness. He just stood there, bathed in gold, looking at me like I actually belonged in the world.

"You aren't screaming," I muttered, my voice sounding incredibly rough and raspy from years of absolute silence in the woods. "You aren't trying to destroy me."

Caelum took a casual step closer, his golden aura shifting gently around him. "Why would I scream? My legs are way too sore from walking for two weeks to waste energy on screaming. Plus, that voice in our heads was pretty clear about us coming here. I figure if you wanted to blast me, you would have done it already."

I looked down at his right arm, noticing that his sleeve was pulled up. The glowing golden half-moon mark on his skin was flashing in a perfect, steady rhythm. At the exact same time, the black mark on my left arm began to throb, matching his frequency beat for beat. The physical pain of the burning skin suddenly faded away, replaced by a strange, humming comfort that flowed through my veins. The biting cold of my body began to mix with the radiating warmth of his light, creating a peaceful neutral zone right down the center of the clearing—a literal divide of crackling, electric energy that split the chasm perfectly between our two halves.

"The marks," I whispered, lifting my left arm so he could see the obsidian crescent burning through my tattered sleeve. "They are connected. We are connected."

"Yeah, looks like we're a matching set," Caelum said, his smile turning a bit softer as he looked at my dark mark. "I felt you, you know. Two weeks ago, when these things first burned into our skin. I felt how cold and lonely your cave was. It woke me right up."

I stared at him, a strange lump forming in my throat. He had felt my isolation, and he hadn't turned away. For twenty-one years, I had been a curse, a broken piece of a family that threw me away like garbage. But standing here in the deep, echoing crags of the Whispering Chasm, looking into the bright eyes of the Dawn-Bringer, I realized the prophecy hadn't just called us to a destination. It had forced my dark shadow to finally find its matching light.
