VOLUME I: THE RESONATING CALL

Caelum's POV

The morning of my twenty-first birthday started out just the way I liked it—loud, bright, and full of people. Looking out my bedroom window, the high white towers of the Vale Sanctuary practically gleamed under the clear blue sky. Down in the courtyards, I could hear my friends laughing as they set up massive wooden tables and wrapped the stone arches in bright golden ribbons. The village priests were running around shouting orders about the birthday feast, treating me like I was some kind of fragile, holy treasure. For as long as I could remember, everyone here looked at me as their personal shield. They truly believed my celestial light magic was a divine gift meant to protect our community from evil forever.

I smiled, pulling on a clean white tunic. I always did my best to keep things light. If a situation was stressful, I was the guy making a terrible joke to break the tension because I hated seeing people sad. I loved my community, but if I was being completely honest, their huge expectations made me incredibly nervous. The big secret was that I couldn't even control my magic yet. Just last week, a loud sneeze made my boots spark, and a sudden burst of laughter caused a nearby glass lamp to shatter into a million pieces. But today, I promised myself I would put those worries away and just enjoy the party.

Then, right as the morning bells started to ring for the festival, a sudden, blinding pain shot straight through my right arm.

I gasped, dropping to my knees on the cold stone floor. It felt like someone was pouring boiling, liquid fire directly into my veins. I gripped my forearm, my breath caught in my throat, as a glowing mark shaped like a perfect half-moon burned its way into my skin. It didn't bleed, but it pulsed with a pure, intense golden light that completely illuminated the dark corners of my bedroom.

Before I could even yell for help, a heavy, ancient voice echoed right inside my head. It didn't use words I had ever learned, but the meaning crashed into my brain with total clarity. It was a command. It was telling me to run, pointing my thoughts toward the center of the continent, toward a deep, empty wasteland called the Whispering Chasm.

The moment that voice spoke, a bizarre mental bridge snapped into place. For a terrifying second, my own mind wasn't entirely mine anymore. I could suddenly feel the freezing, lonely dampness of a dark stone cave. I felt a deep, heavy sadness and a biting cold that had nothing to do with the sunny morning in the Vale. It was like I was looking through someone else's eyes—someone who was completely alone in the dark.

And then, just as quickly, I felt a strange echo come back from the other side of the bridge. It was a phantom rush of my own warm sunlight and the distant sound of my birthday bells, being pulled away into that dark, cold place.

The voice inside my head felt like a physical rope, tugging at my chest and dragging me toward the door. I stood up slowly, my legs shaking as I stared down at my glowing golden arm. The happy shouts of the festival were still drifting through my window, but the joyful boy who wanted to eat birthday cake was gone. I knew I couldn't stay here. Something massive and ancient had just woken up, and it was calling my name.

I didn't say goodbye to the priests, and I didn't tell my friends. I just grabbed a small traveling pack, slipped out the back door of the Sanctuary, and started walking away from the only home I had ever known. I was terrified, but I knew I had to find out who was waiting for me at the end of that dark line.

Riven's POV

The day before I turned twenty-one felt exactly like every other day of my life—freezing, quiet, and completely lonely. I was sitting on the damp dirt floor of my small stone cave, deep inside the darkest part of the Whispering Woods. Outside, a thick, heavy fog rolled through the ancient trees. The forest was so dense that the sun never reached the ground here. It was a miserable place, but it was my only home. My family had abandoned me here when I was just a baby because they were terrified of my shadow magic. I grew up with no friends, no family, and no happy songs. I knew that my dark presence made living things weak and sick, so I stayed hidden in the dark to keep the world safe from me.

I pulled my tattered black cloak tighter around my shoulders to block the chill. I was a quiet person, and I preferred the silence. My wild black flames only erupted from my fingers when I let my emotions get the best of me, so I spent every day forcing myself to feel absolutely nothing. No anger, no sadness, no hope. Just empty peace.

But as the night grew deeper, a sudden, terrifying pain exploded in my left arm.

I let out a sharp cry, collapsing against the stone wall of the cave. It felt like a piece of frozen volcanic glass was cutting its way through my flesh from the inside out. I gripped my forearm, my teeth grinding together, as a dark mark shaped like a half-moon burned into my skin. It didn't bleed. Instead, it pulsed with a heavy, obsidian darkness that actively swallowed the tiny bit of moonlight peeking into my cave.

Before I could even process the pain, a massive, ancient voice roared inside my head. It didn't speak in a human language, but the command slammed into my mind with perfect clarity. It told me to move. It pointed my internal compass toward the center of the continent, toward a dead, rocky wasteland known as the Whispering Chasm.

The moment the voice spoke, a bizarre mental bridge snapped into place. For a terrifying second, my brain was flooded with feelings that weren't mine. I suddenly felt a massive rush of warm, blinding sunlight. I heard the loud, happy ringing of festival bells and the sound of people laughing. I felt an overwhelming wave of joy and safety—things I had never experienced in my entire life. It was so bright and loud that it made my head spin.

And then, I felt a strange echo travel back across the bridge. The person on the other side was feeling my freezing cold cave, my heavy darkness, and my deep loneliness. We were locked together.

The voice inside my mind felt like a heavy iron chain, dragging my body toward the cave entrance. I stood up slowly on shaky legs, staring down at my pulsing black arm. The forest outside was pitch black and dangerous, but the quiet life I had built in hiding was officially over. I knew that whatever had just awakened would not let me stay in my cave.

I grabbed my small hunting knife, stepped out into the foggy woods, and began my long march toward the crags. I was full of fear and anger, but I had to find the person who had just forced their bright, burning light into my dark world.
