Just before the test

...

"Well...To be honest, isn't there too big a difference in strength between teams A and B?" Hax remarked, throwing Hansung a questioning look.

"What? No way!" Hansung replied in a flippant tone, waving his hand dismissively, "The test is completely fair! There's no difference whatsoever!"

"..." Lero-Ro looked deeply unimpressed with Hansung's theatrics.

"What's wrong? I thought it was pretty fair..." Ren commented somewhat casually.

With that statement, everyone in the room, including Hansung, looked at Ren in bewilderment.

...Or at least almost everyone:

Lero-Ro had simply stopped giving a fuck.

During the test

...

"...Ms. Sunna, please keep what I'm about to tell you a secret." Hoh all but whispered in my ear.

I nodded my head slightly, almost imperceptibly, to Hoh.

"...Try not to act surprised but I think someone on our team is targeting Baam." Hoh continued, tiny beads of sweat starting to form on his forehead.

"...What?" I said, feigning surprise.

"Shh," he whispered, "be quiet."

"...What do you mean someone's after Baam?" I said, lowering my voice.

"Shh, not here...Someone might be listening." Hoh said, glancing meaningfully at Serena.

"...Why don't we go somewhere more private?" He continued, a bead of sweat trickling down his forehead.

"...Alright." I replied, nodding my head slightly. I clutched the straps of my backpack tightly.

Together we crept away as quietly as possible, leaving Selena behind.

Near the safety zone - Some time later

...

"What the hell are you doing...pointing a knife at your teammate?" Quant asked, in rather a condescending tone of voice.

"Um...this...this isn't..." Hoh trailed off, at a loss for words. Small beads of sweat trickled down his face as he attempted to come up with an excuse.

A million thoughts raced through his mind.

"...You're doomed. You idiot." finished Quant, scowling.

Hoh took a few steps backwards before turning to run inside the safety zone. "Damn it!"

"You think you can just run from me?! Huh?!!" Quant shouted, chasing after him.

*Swoosh*

A spear whizzed past Quant, missing his head by a fraction of an inch. Quant jumped backwards, narrowly avoiding the spear.

Hoh stepped inside the safety zone, panting. His heart was thumping so violently that it seemed to batter against his ribs.

The safety zone - Some time later

"Why are you just standing there?! Go get him!!" Hoh shouted angrily at Baam, his eyes flashing, "Or else...!!"

*Stab*

A punch in the stomach. That's what it felt like...A really, really hard punch in the stomach. It took all I had to not scream out in pain.

Baam stared in horror, trying to understand what had just occurred.

"...Do you want her to die?!" Hoh yelled, desperation lacing his tone.

Baam hesitated only a moment longer before turning with a resolute air to Quant.

The safety zone - Some time later

"...I just hated you so much." Hoh said, his voice hollow.

*Stab*

"...No!! Hoh! Why did you?! Please don't die, Hoh!...Please!!" Baam shouted, tears rolling down his face. "...Why is everyone leaving me!!"

"Stop it, Baam." I said in a tired voice.

Baam turned to look at me, sniffling.

"...There's nothing you could've done to stop him." I continued.

"But!-" Baam started but was quickly interrupted.

"Baam...When people lose the things they cherish...they lose their reason to live." I said, starting to feel lightheaded due to blood loss.

Baam looked at me strangely before saying, in almost a whisper, "...Then why did you leave me?"

The words stung, and I forced my face into its normal smooth calm, determined to not let it show.

"...You're smart enough to know the answer to that question, Baam." I muttered, my consciousness beginning to ebb like a tide receding from the shore.

"...We could've worked something out..." Baam protested, sounding like a kicked puppy. "...we still can."

The cave - A few months earlier

"Close your eyes, Baam." I said softly, covering his eyes with my hands.

"...Will you show me an image of your family today?" Baam asked in a slightly pleading tone.

"...My family?"

"It's just that you never talk about your past..." Baam continued rather shyly.

"Hmm...maybe not today, Baam." I replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "...How about I show you the night sky instead?"

"...Alright." Baam mumbled, sounding rather dejected.

"Oh, cheer up, will you?" I said, feeling somewhat guilty. "...How about tomorrow, I show you an image of my pet hamster?"

"Really?" Baam exclaimed happily.

"Really." I answered with a chuckle. "Now, shut up and close your eyes already."

Baam did so while clearing his mind. A few moments later, he started feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Baam felt that he was quickly becoming addicted to the sensation.

...So, there is a reason why she 'allowed' Hoh to stab her...I swear she's not a masochist.

Also...this story will probably soon start to diverge from the original...though I'll probably try to keep some of the key events...this won't turn into a complete AU...probably, I think?

By the way...if you have any suggestions as to what should be Sunna's favourite fairy tale, please do tell 8-)

...I'll stop talking now.
