Zandriel was sitting in the war room with his brethren when he started to hear this buzzing. It was almost like when one of his siblings was trying to open a line of communication, but the frequency was off. It sounded like one of the human phones buzzing in his head. It was getting louder and harder to ignore. He attempted to open a line of communication but there was no response. He glanced around the room to see if any of his brothers or sisters heard it, but they all seemed perfectly normal. If they were hearing this sound there's no way they would be able to ignore it. It was insistent, yet they didn't answer when he laid out the communications. Zandriel looked at his siblings again to see if they noticed anything, but no one was paying any attention to him, so he closed his eyes and tried to pinpoint where the buzzing originated from.
The world appeared in his mind like it would on a map from memory. It wasn't coming from anywhere in Europe. Wasn't any of the smaller islands, that few people he'd be able to find the buzzing right away. It seemed like it was coming from the United States. He tried to focus all of his energy on finding the buzzing when something hit him square in the forehead.
Within a second the connection was lost and he was no closer to finding the buzzing. Zandriel opened his eyes to see his brother, Mandiriel, covering his mouth with his hand trying to curb the sound of his laughter. He narrowed his eyes at his childlike brother and focused back on the meeting. The buzzing had stopped, for now, he couldn't trace it until it started up again. His Superior glanced at Mandiriel, who quickly dropped his hand and pretended like he was taking notes. Mandiriel should've known that was going to be suspicious, he had never taken notes a day in his afterlife. Superior raised his eyebrow and looked at Zandriel who just shook his head. Superior nodded and carried on with the meeting.
But, even as Zandriel tried to focus back on the meeting, his mind kept wandering back to the buzzing. He had so many questions. He wanted to know what it was, why he heard it and none of his family seemed to. Why the frequency was off, why they didn't respond. He had many questions. All he knew was it came from somewhere in the U.S. Shaking his head, he cleared his mind of everything but the meeting.
A while later, just as the meeting was coming to a close, the buzzing started again. This time louder, and more persistent. Zandriel tried to pretend it wasn't ringing in his ears, but it got even louder. He pressed his pointer and middle fingers to his head where the buzzing started a headache. He moved his fingers in a circle, trying to relieve the pressure. Looking up, he caught eyes with Superior, who took one look at him and ended the meeting. "That's all for today, thank you all for coming. I do ask that you leave quickly, I have something to do." Superior looked back at Zandriel, then to Mandiriel. He opened communication with both of them saying calmly, "You two are to stay." Both nodded and remained seated while everyone exited the room. Superior gathered his notes and waved to the last angel. "Close the door Harriel, please." Her eyes flickered towards Mandiriel, then to Zandriel as if surprised to see him with Superior. She nodded and closed the door behind her.
Superior turned back towards the two of us still seated. He looked at Mandiriel then Zandriel. The buzzing had dulled for a moment allowing him to relax a bit. He looked up at Superior who was standing between the U shape of the war room, also between him and Mandiriel. He examined both of them. Mandiriel was trying to look as innocent as possible and Zandriel was trying not to wince at the stabbing headache he was feeling. It was odd to feel a headache, it wasn't like angels couldn't feel pain. It was just a different type of pain. This felt like it was bouncing between his temples, trying to break out. His hands flew to his head, trying to suppress the pain. It was like he had a lighting bolt flying on either side of his head, and each time it connected with the other side it was like it was gaining strength. Zandriel hadn't realized his eyes were closed until Superior and Mandiriel went quiet, opening his eyes a moment he noted the concerned expressions. While he was surprised to see Mandiriel's face to be anything other than mischievous, he couldn't focus on anything other than the buzzing.
Superior helped him to the ground and then stared into his eyes. "What are you hearing? Why is it affecting you like this?" Superior looked down at his hands and then back to Zandriel. "This may seem odd, but if you allow me I can feel what you're feeling. I can help you figure out what's happening and why I just need you to consent." Zandriel nodded his head keeping his eyes closed, after realizing the light made it hurt more. He had been in thousands of battles, had been stabbed, shot, tortured, nothing had hurt quite this bad or had felt like anything of this caliber. Superior knelt on his left side and placed his hands on either side of Zandriel's head. He closed his eyes and hummed one tune. Zandriel felt a difference immediately. It felt lighter, almost like Superior himself had taken some of the pain away. He opened his eyes, ready to thank his mentor, and get on his way when the buzzing started again. Superior opened his eyes and stared dumbfounded at Zandriel, who stared back with a furrow in his brow. Superior opened his mouth then closed it. Nodded to himself and then stood. "During the meeting, you had your eyes closed. You were trying to find out where that buzzing was coming from weren't you?" He started to pace, Zandriel exchanged a look of concern with Mandriel. Neither of them had ever seen their mentor pace. He rarely showed any type of emotion, though he was one of the few higher-ups who would show pride when one of the lower levels got their ability or showed the capability to lead. Zandriel himself had gotten that look and had felt like he could take on the world. Their mentor was as close to a parent as angels had ever gotten. Superior suddenly stopped pacing and turned to Zandriel and his brother. "Zandriel, that buzzing, it's a human. Calling your name. I need to know and I need to know now. Have you been in any contact with the humans?" Zandriel felt his brow furrow deeper. Only guardian angels and the reapers were allowed to go down to earth unless he or she was on a mission. Even then only certain angels were sent to the human world on missions. Most angels believed humans would corrupt the pureness of the angel's life force. Besides all of that, Zandriel is a soldier. He's only gone where he's told. Looking back up at Superior he shakes his head. He'd never had a reason to go earth, he usually was on the lower level planets fighting in their wars. While the earth has had its share of war times, none of them was of high enough caliber for angels to intervene. Compared to many of the other planets earth was far behind, some had even exploded a few times before earth even had humans. Superior nodded with a curious expression on his face. "Peculiar... Zandriel, you're now on a mission. Find out as much as you can about this human, I'd like to know why you're being called. Mandiriel, you're to be his second on this mission. Follow him, and watch his back. While it seems to be just a human I'd rather you not walk into a trap. Mandiriel, if I hear a word about you not doing as told you'll be on Planet 616 for the remainder of this eon, maybe by then you'll stop behaving like a human child. I'll relieve both of you of your duties here for as long as necessary. I'm going to do a bit of research on this end and let you know if I find anything." Superior nodded to Zandriel, then Mandiriel before turning and exiting the war room.
Zandriel stood immediately, shrugging his wings out. He took a moment to look at his brother. "Five minutes, get whatever you need, I'll do the same. I'm leaving in five minutes if you're not with me, and ready, you're being left behind." He waited for a moment more for Mandiriel to nod before leaping out of the window. He went straight for his room, the pounding in his head not allowing him a moment's respite. He opened his closet after entering his code, grabbing a bag he tossed in his smaller weapons, then a set of human clothes, and his robes. Closing the closet and relocking it he turned to the resting space. Walking around the bed, he grabbed his sword. After securing it to his back he grabbed his bag and exited the room. Leaving through his window Zandriel popped his wings back out and flew to the war room. He had taken exactly two minutes to fly there, get his stuff and fly back, leaving Mandiriel three minutes to get here before he left. As childish as Mandiriel liked to act, he was a very capable soldier and Zandriel had no doubt he'd get there on time, even if it was only by seconds.
While he was waiting he decided to see if he could get a better location on the human. Closing his eyes again, he pulled up his mental world map. He already knew to focus on the United States, as they liked to call it. While the buzzing had stopped, he could still feel the remaining effects bashing against the sides of his head. It came from a big city, bustling with energy, however, the energy he was focused on was different. It was brighter, purer of a form than even the soul of a newly born child. This energy was drawing him in like a demon was drawn to a vulnerable mortal. As soon as Mandiriel appeared with his things, they took off. Zandriel flying full speed, and his brother just trying to keep up. Zandriel knew he was flying too fast, but it had gotten to the point where his wings had a mind of their own. He had to find this human, and he had to know why they called for him.
