“Babe, I’m sorry.”
Diana turned to face Emily as she collected the jug from her. She just needed to keep her hands busy.
“What are you sorry for; it’s not like you did anything.”
“D, you know how Lisa can be when she is preparing for something....that has her name written all over it.”
Diana turned to face her. “I know; I am just shocked.”
Emily looked at her as she sat down on the chair. If one would look at the way Diana was acting, they’d interpret it like she was angry at her boyfriend; wasn’t this too much love for a family member? Emily wondered.
Family was close to the extent they argue, they fight; Diana acted like she couldn’t function if she didn’t speak to him, if she didn’t see him. How do you explain twins’ relationship where their parents left them at a young age with responsibilities and their mean aunt? But they were older now; shouldn’t there be a difference?
Emily looked at her friend again; how can she understand that relationship; when they were only two in her family; she was the eldest. Someone once said: “Family was everything. Friends come and go but family remains.”
“D, can you tell me, why is Ben avoiding you?”
Diana looked at her for a minute. She trusted Emily; most of what they spoke about never got out. There were some things neither Cassie nor Elisabeth knew.
Ben and Diana’s moms were different but their father loved them equally.
“Well, I did something....actually.....but I didn’t think he would take it so serious; I didn’t know he would be so embarrassed.”
“What was that?”
Diana looked at her. “I told Katherine about him.”
Emily stopped for a second to remember who Katherine was. “Katherine? Katherine........Katherine Humphrey.......the accountant.” She remembered smiling.
“Yes. Accountant.....he talked about her for days.” She paused.
Emily looked at her and nodded her head for her to continue.
“I just thought I could do something about it like hook them up.....but when they met, Katherine made fun of him...that he couldn’t man up and ask her himself but rather send his sister to be his spokesman.”
Diana looked at her when she didn’t say anything. “She told him; he wasn’t a man; he was just a girl hiding under the skirts of his sister.” She looked down at the table.
Emily shook her head. She had seen Katherine once; when she witnessed her confrontation with the bank. She looked confident; extremely competent but from what her friend told her; she had a nasty attitude; especially to someone who even look her way.
“Did she apologize?” Maybe probably when she realized she was too harsh.
Diana looked at Emily. “I haven’t seen her since then.”
“Maybe she was ashamed to show herself to Ben since he practically runs the company.” Emily notified.
Diana just nod.
“Give him time and talk to him again; I am sure he would have gotten over it.” Emily said calmly. They didn’t live in the same house. Diana lived in the big mansion with some of her cousins and Ben had his own place, he only came by when he needed free time.
Diana nod.
Cassie looked at them from the side of the door as Emily moved to the dishwasher to wash the glass cups before Diana stood to rinse. Diana was smiling again.
It was great to see her smile.
“Cassie!”
She tiptoed the way she did to the kitchen, back to the living before Diana and Emily found out she had been listening in on their conversation.
“Yes, Lisa.” She answered when she reached the couch.
Her friend was grinning from ear to ear. “Guess what?”
Cassie walked in front of the couch and sat down before she answered. “What?” Finally she had finished the conversation with her pilot.
“Greg said he is going to be here for the exhibition.”
Really? “Wow! That is awesome” Indeed. She gave an excuse for a smile; when Elisabeth was convinced she actually meant it.
“Are you hungry?” She asked on her way to the kitchen.
“Starving.” She said.
Cassie picked up her phone when Elisabeth left the room.
It wasn’t as if she didn’t like Greg, it was just he has never made promises he could keep. He just promised and didn’t fulfill it and Elisabeth kept going on like there was nothing wrong. If she was as special like he claimed she was; wasn’t there some things he had to go out of his way and do for her?
Relationship and their hurdles; who would blame her, if she said; she didn’t want to date?
No body.
