“What was that?” She asked when they sat down in the cafeteria.
“I thought this is where after the hero intervenes; the lady is supposed to say appreciative words.” He said with a smile.
She scoffed and smiled. “I’m sorry. Thank you for that.”
He did a courtesy bow. She laughed.
“Wasn’t that too much acting?” He kissed; held her, told Jake; they have been dating for longer than any of her other relationships.
“I can’t say that because Jake seems liked he has been lied to a lot or he lies a lot; to know when someone else was lying.....I’m sorry, I had to make it convincing.”
That was why past convincing.
“I hope you won’t mind if we did a bit of acting, when we are around him.” Which, he was practically game.
She scoffed. For him to stay away from her and go back to his wife; it was fine. But right now, her body missed his closeness. Though it was a mere kiss; it felt like something more.
Wait, did this guy drug her or something; that she felt so attached to him, that she wanted to be attached to him.
“So, do you do this to every lady; you find in a distressing situation?” She picked up the straw from it pocket and began to play with it.
He smiled. “No....not every lady. Just those I see are unable to control the situation.”
“So, Why do you think that; regarding my case?”
The waitress came by. “Sir.....”
“Later.” He told the waitress; he wanted to talk to Cassie and he didn’t need the lady interpreting his or her words. She excused herself.
“Honestly, I came to your office to see you....well......”
She waited.
“To ask if you would like to have lunch with me.” He said with a smile.
They were thinking the same thing; she had been wondering when he would make his move because she wanted to make the first move.
“When I got there; I heard his voice....it was rude but I couldn’t help it when you began to struggle with him.”
She looked away. Jake was good at washing his dirty linen outside; another one of his traits.
“Who is he to you?” He asked.
She sighed when he got the brief of the story; he might as well know the entire story. “The manager of my department. We dated like he said for four months.”
“Then why do you want to break up? He seems really into you.” He told her.
She snealed. “Yeah, but I am not interested.”
“Because of me...this hunk of a guy?” He pointed at himself with a smile.
She laughed. “Don’t kid yourself.” He knew he was fine. Guys who knew how handsome they were had a lot of pride.
Really? Was that a fact?
She smiled. “He is married.....wait, how did you know he was married?”
“I was going over the organization managers and departments a few days ago; My uncle briefed me.”
She nodded. Did she forget he was the owner?
“I found out a month ago; he was married but he didn’t tell me; he was just keeping as his side chick.....I don’t want to be the second wife.”
He shook his head in agreement. “No female does.”
“I hated the fact that he didn’t tell me, the one important thing in his life. I hated he kept it a secret and I hated the fact I was going to destroy a home. That was why I opted out immediately.”
He nodded. “It is not good being lied to.”
She looked at him.
“But why didn’t you tell him; it looks like he doesn’t have the faintest idea what he did; that got you to act like that, without talking over it first.”
She scoffed. “He is smart in areas of women; he shouldn’t figure it out or better yet, move on with his wife and forget about me.”
“Well, that wouldn’t be so easy.” He said with honesty.
If he did forget her; he wouldn’t know her office or come find her.
“And the teacher?” He asked with an intriguing smile.
She looked at him; he was urging her to pour her heart out but she didn’t want just tell her story to anyone....to just anyone.
“I have been in relationships where all they want is my body; it just didn’t end well.”
“And the ones who dumped you?”
She remembered the funny story. “Were in a rush to marry me and make me a second wife or a mistress; I am not ready for that.” She wasn’t a second option; there were women who wanted that but she wasn’t a second option.
“Why did you just say it without thinking?” She asked about how he swayed Jake with the words he said.
He laughed and relaxed his shoulders. “First, I assume you would have dated a lot of guys; dump a lot of guys. Secondly, Jake looked like that type of man to want to keep a relationship on the side while married.”
“Really? It is not written on the face.”
He laughed. “Cassandra, it takes a guy to understand what other guys say.”
Like Fred believes Joshua is not lying to her.
She looked at him; she wanted to know his story. He couldn’t just be a rich guy with no issues.
“What about you?” She asked.
“Me?”
She nodded. “I just placed my entire private life on a gold patter for no price. Tell me your story; let’s be even.”
He laughed out hard. “I like the way you talk.”
They both laughed.
“My story is a bit shorter than yours. I have been in relationship which didn’t last longer than six months. I think it is a curse. After six months something goes wrong and it ends. “
“Nothing goes wrong?” She didn’t believe that. This was what? Spiritual? She knew people who were cursed deserved it, not wronged. If he was this successful.....business course finished; his sisters didn’t die, his uncle loves him like a son to give him what is rightfully his; he was then a blessing not a curse.
“Maybe a curse is too much to defined it or describe it.” She said lightly.
“I just know the ladies; I have met; either does not have time to spare a moment with me or is after my money; when I tell her the truth.”
She knew there were some and there were some. “Maybe you just haven’t met the right one yet.”
“Maybe and besides; I am not dying soon, so I am taking my time.” He nodded.
The waitresses came again. “Excuse me, what....”
Cassandra looked at her and smiled apologetically for what Joshua did the first time. He still said Later.
She just nodded and excused herself.
“You know we ought to have ordered something by now.”
He nodded. “I know I just wanted to listen to you talk.”
“That is sweet of you; but if we don’t order now; we won’t get by to work on time, we won’t catch up and you will be regarded as an annoying customer.”
He shrugged. “I don’t care about being annoying but I can’t afford to waste whole time but I meant it when I said I missed you.”
She looked at him; just the same time, the waitress put the meals on the table. When she left she continued.
If he missed her, he should have come look for her.
“What happened, I thought you stopped supervising.” She asked, because she was sure; he wasn’t only staying in the company as the administrative director. There was something to it. Anna had told her there were times; she saw him in the account department, sometimes she saw him talking to the receptionist. That would look like flirting, getting to know more people in the company but Anna told her; she asked Leonard what he thought about Joshua; he simply said he was a shy; he showed up at almost every meeting and the director does not mind. Anna was pregnant in her third trimester; she and Cassie shared an office and Leonard worked in the office opposite theirs but Anna wasn’t always around because of the baby and Cassia workload was increasing.
He said as he sipped his juice. “How did you know I have been supervising?” He asked.
She shrugged. “Well, a lot of persons have been watching you spy on your own company.”
“I didn’t make it obvious, did I?”
“Why?” Didn’t he trust his uncle to do a good job?
“My uncle is going to retire in few weeks time and work on his farm; he wants me to take responsibility and I can’t do that if I have no idea; how things work here. I just got back from a conference meeting last night with him; I had to come to work this morning; if I didn’t who would run the company for me?”
“Your cousins?” She suggested when he looked at her with question in his eyes.
He laughed. “Jade and Benny are not in the country and they have their different lives; Sarah is comfortable with a catering business ad I can’t let my family’s legacy go away from me. So I need to work hard to secure and enlarge it.”
And while he was at it; chase her around? She wondered. Was that why he wanted to be friends with her; so that even if she was married, even if she went far away; they would still be friends.
“Don’t overexert yourself. There are people, you need to look after.”
She had looked into his facebook account; his sisters were beautiful, faces like angels, smiles so divine. They were sixteen and they looked up to him; Annabelle and Anastasia. Colors which match side by side but different. Gold and yellow, cream and off white. Twins.
He smiled and nodded his head.
“Cassandra, I’m sorry. I haven’t contacted you all this while; I have been busy. You must have been worried.” He said with a smile.
Worried? She? Why? For what reason?
“I understand; I thought you were the hardworking type wouldn’t miss work at all but I understand.” She gave her excuse; which was partly the truth.
He smiled. “I have to take breaks though. I can’t kill myself like that.”
She laughed. Of course he couldn’t.
There was a comfortable silence between them for a minute or two. Cassandra looked at her and he looked back at her with a smile; making her smile in return and he remembered something;
“Cassandra......I will like to tell you something. I just want you to hear me out.”
She stopped eating and looked at him; he bearably touched his food, wasn’t he hungry? She looked at him as she remembered his question.
“Of course. Go ahead.” She yearn him on.
“What happened at your office........I wanted to do it......but not to convince Jake we were actually together; I wanted to kiss you; to hold your hand like that because I like you.....a lot then I expected actually.” He confessed.
His tapped his fingers lightly on the table; Cassie looked at his eyes and down to his fingers; he looked nervous but this wasn’t his first time confessing to somebody then she suddenly found it hard to breath.
Her heart beat uncontrollably in her chest. Maybe she should have ran when she should have and he felt the same attraction she felt for him; he missed her, the same way she missed him.
When he kissed her lips for those two seconds; her senses flew out of the windows; if he kissed her for real; what would happen then?
She would die and come back?
“Honestly, I was going to tell you exactly how I feel about you today, I was going to tell the truth but....I heard Jake and I decided to pull up that stunt.”
“What did you propose was going to happen; if I agreed to be friends with you?” she wasn’t ready to get into any relationship right now but she can try and friend-zone him.
He smiled and raised his hand to his chest like he swore. “I was never going to touch you; I was going to tell you how I feel about you and still insist we be friends; I was going to promise to be there whenever you needed me. But I figured, a girl like you would probably be engaged or coupled up with someone that was why I decided to be friends first to back you up and support you.”
“Did you think, if I broke up with him; I would come to you?” Was that the idea? No matter how many guys she dates; I would still wait for her and she would always come to me? Was that the idea?
He shook his head. “I will like to be there to hear you cry, to wipe your tears with my shirt; if possible; help you rise stronger to your dreams; help you get the man you want. To be your friend and I wanted your support in return.”
“And if I still do not accept?”
He smiled, titled his head a bit and then sat up and looked straight at her.. “Cassandra Angelo, you are one intriguing person....if you don’t accept. I will help you in the shadows. You can’t survive without your knight in shining armor.”
Chee! She smiled; he was incredible and even if she says no; a part of her wanted to be with him; close to him.
He ate his meal like she had only improved his mood. “Would you like to be my friend, Cassandra?”
She looked at him; Friends with her upper hand boss; he had two sister; two cars; Anna had showed her his second car on the driveway In front of the building; apparently, Anna has seen him before. He likes her; would not want to scare her off by asking her to be his girlfriend; so here he was, simply going with the flow.
What have she got to lose.....apart from high influence in the company?
She extended her hand for a handshake. “Call me Cassie; my friends call me Cassie.”
He happily took her head; they both kept smiling for a while until one of the employees in the company passed and looked at them strangely before walking off.
Rumor has just begun.
They dropped their hands. “By the way, Joshua......I am paying.” She told him. It was her treat by the way.
He laughed wholeheartedly and she saw the smile reached his eyes, she smiled back.
Can she run from this feeling? Can she ever?
