James Reynolds' POV

My friend, Jacob (Maria's new husband), and I formulated a plan to get more money. I know it's greedy but we could do with the extra cash. We had managed to gain access to the revolutionary war veterans' pensions, but we got caught and imprisoned for it. Jacob dropped me in it and said I was involved in speculation with Mr. Hamilton. James Monroe visited me in prison asking me on these charges. I paid Hamilton and promised him I wouldn't tell anyone of the affair. I told him he had been embezzling funds. They went to question Maria on this, I'm not sure why they spoke to her but that was the last I heard of it.

Hamilton's POV

James Monroe came to my office accompanied by Abraham Venable and Frederick Muhlenburg. They came to me accusing me of stealing money and giving it to James Reynolds.

They said:

"We have the check stubs from separate accounts, almost a thousand dollars paid in different amounts to a Mr. James Reynold back in 1791.

"You are uniquely situated by virtue of your position, though 'virtue' is not a word I'd apply to this situation. To seek financial gain, to stray from your sacred mission and the evidence suggests you've engaged in speculation. An immigrant embezzling our government funds - I can almost see the headline, your career is done. I hope you've saved some money for your daughter and sons, you best go and run back  to where you came from."

After they had accused me of stealing American money I gave a laugh and told them, "You don't even know what you're asking me to confess."

"Confess..." They prompted me to go on.

"You have nothing I don't have to tell you anything at all," I paused and thought about the situation at hand. "Unless..."

"Unless?"

"If I can prove that I never broke the law, do you promise not to tell another soul what you saw?"

They hesitantly agreed.

I showed the letter from James Reynolds. I showed them all the records of every check I've ever made. I gave them all kinds of proof.

"As you can see I kept a record of every check-in my checkered history, check it again against your list, and see consistency. I never spent a cent that wasn't mine, you sent the dogs after my scent, that's fine! Yes, I have reasons for shame but I have not committed treason and sullied my good name. As you can see I've done nothing to provoke legal action. Are my answers to your satisfaction?"

I had told them every single piece of proof to show them I have not stolen any money that I was put in charge of. I can be trusted with this and they needed to know. After this, they left.

(This part is just part of the story, it's not really a PoV)

Little did Hamilton know, James Monroe was friendly with his enemy, Thomas Jefferson. He sent the information about Hamilton's Affair with Maria to him. Hamilton really went into detail and told them as much as he could to prove his point. Thomas also happened to be friends with a journalist. Jefferson saved this information for when it could be used effectively against Hamilton.
