Watching My Back

The rumbling of clouds wakes me up before my alarm does. I can sleep in another ten minutes, but I know it won’t make a difference. I stumble out of bed, making my way to the shower. It them hits me Demi will no longer be at the school. The same nostalgia fills me as when Annie died. I took a deep breath, and continued my normal routine. Mum goes to work early on Mondays so I have the whole house to myself. Yesterday I got a text from Sean saying he would take me out later on in the week. I felt like I was floating on a cloud, like this wasn’t even real.

I make my way to the bus stop, my head still in the clouds. Of course that had to be cut short by the glares by Nikki at the back of the bus. I frowned, what got her panties in a knot today? I shrugged, sitting further down the front than usual. Don’t want to sit near them right now, whatever her problem was. When it was time to get of the bus, Nikki pushed her way down the front, pushing me into the window.

“You get what comes your way.” She shouts, for the whole bus to hear. She then makes her way off the bus with her friends. I shrug it off then make my way off the bus and up the school. I’m the only one here because Demi is no longer here. I sigh. What was wrong with Nikki? I had no idea. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.

Christy walks by me. I wave at her; she just stares at me and keeps walking.

“Christy! Wait.” I run after her. She stops and turns around.

“What do you want?” She says harshly.

“Hey, what’s with the cold shoulder?” I ask her. Did everyone eat the same thing this morning?

“You should know.”

“Well, I don’t.”

“You went on a date with Sean.” She stated. What? How did she know? And what’s so bad about that?

“How did you find that out?”

“Mickey saw you two at the movies. She was with Indie and Julie.” She stated, blankly.

“So, what’s the problem?” I asked, confused.

“Besides the obvious? Nikki and Sean had a thing, well so we all thought, and they were going to become a couple. Until you came along. You ruined everything!” She yelled the last part.

“It’s not like I asked him out!” I said.

“Did you say yes?”

“No way.” I said, sarcastically.

“Then it’s your entire fault. He’s probably using you fo-“I didn’t want to hear the last part. I had already heard it when it was said to Annie. I stormed away.

“Fine! Walk away! Why would I want to talk to you anyway?” She yelled.

I stormed of, running into the now pouring rain. I run through a garden and down the hill. There stood Sean. What would I say to him?

“Sean!” I yelled out, hair, clothes, shoes all wet.

“Hey.” He nodded.

“You had a ‘thing’ with Nikki?” I asked.

“Not really. Why?”

“Everyone’s a little angry with me because I ‘took you away from her.”

“Don’t worry bout it, I’ll talk to them. Now get out of the rain.” He slipped his arm around my shoulder. “Or at least let me soak as well.”

I smiled, feeling the warmth of his body against mine in the freezing cold. I sighed. He smelt like mint. It won’t be ok. She will make me pay. People glared or just looked at us when we walked in. He kissed me goodbye. Finally, I can make someone jealous. I smirked when I turned away to my friends.
