Chapter 8
Dead. Dead. The boy was dead. I couldn't wrap my head around the dead body. In fact I was so shocked I couldn't move. I was frozen in place. Just staring at the poor boy in front of me. I didn't acknowledge the fact everyone had dispersed. Quickly moving away. I just stood there.
Soon two different pairs of arms had grabbed me, dragging me away. I didn't even acknowledge that, still staring at the boy. I was being dragged further and further away and soon I was in a tent that was unfamiliar.
It took a few moments for me to come back to reality. I looked up to the concerned face of Ian.
"Lily, are you alright?"
I swallowed, my throat dry, and nodded at him. I looked around and saw Matthew a few paces away from us. He must of been the other pair of arms that took me away.
"I'm sorry, I just.... I completely froze." I spoke quietly, bringing my gaze back to Ian. His expression softened even more at my words.
"Hey," he said, putting a comforting arm on my elbow. "This isn't your fault. We're going to be okay. Just remember that. I promised you that."
And I believed him. He had this look of sincerity in his brown eyes.
Matthew coughed behind us, breaking the spell.
"Uhm sorry to interrupt whatever ye have going on there but well I feel awkward so yeah I'm interrupting. Anyway, Lily is it?"
I nodded at him. My voice seemed to have been lost.
"And you're Ian yeah?"
Ian nodded at him also, not letting go of my arm.
"Well I'm sure you've come to the observation that I have, this place is a hellhole. If that incident is anything to go by, we're screwed. I mean a little slip up could lead to being shot in the head. I don't know about you but I don't think I'll last here long. Not sure if I want to."
Ian and I both looked at Matthew, both us inclining for him to go on to see what his point was.
"I've noticed that you guys were specifically chosen for something. Most of the dumbasses here failed to notice that because you're not dead, the dictator douchebag obviously wanted something from the two of you. Lily specifically."
I raised my eyebrows impressed he had picked up on that. No one had picked up on the fact we must have been released for a reason. But this guy had.
"Anyway," he continued, "you two must be really clever or something because she'd sooner be able to trip over thin air than be some physical asset and you're just average physically so it must be intelligence."
Ian and I's mouths must have hit the floor at that point. Jeez this guy was observant.
"So basically I want your intelligence, to help us get out of here."
I scoffed at this. Was he insane? Did he not see the 400ft wall surrounding the camp. He narrowed his eyes at me.
"How are we supposedly going to escape?" I asked very unbelievingly.
He smirked at me. Then replied in almost a placating tone,
"Well we're just gonna climb over the wall, Lily."
